Lilo - Female Green Cheek Conure ~ Pal - male cockatiel ~ Pheobe - female cockatiel
Hello, recently I got a new Senegal parrot. He likes my dad a lot and he seems to like my sister. Backstory of him, He used to be handled by the man all the time. But the wife and daughters never paid much attention to him. So all the attention he got was from a man. Now the man stopped handling him and left him alone for 4 years. So he love to sit with my dad but will he ever like me? He lunges at me and bites so I don't bother him. sometimes he lets me hold him and I give him plenty of treats. Witch he loves! But will he ever like me and stop biting me? I will probably be the only one with him when the holidays are over and things get back to normal. Also he does let me pet his head a little. I do read to him and talk to him when he is in his cage. I just would like another feathered friend to have! I want him to be my friend and not want him to bite me! I know that he may never like me as much as dad but that's ok, he is my dads bird after all but I want him to feel comfortable around me at least!

Also. I am usually the one to bring him out of his cage.

He likes it when I read to him, but he is chewing up the books I read him! :p And he has not been abused at all so I don't think he hates people. I hope...

I can see how you can be a bit discouraged. :(...kinda takes the fun out of a new bird. sennies will latch onto one person, then for no apparent reason change their minds at a later date ;)....don't give up...give it time. at least he doesn't attack you which they are known for. maybe you'll be his 'go to person' if your hubby is not around....congratulations on your new addition.....:)

Be patient and keep bribing him with treats and talking to him. I bet he'll come around with time.

ok, I need help.... He is so mean! When its just me with him, we are besties! But when my dads around, he bites me! It hurts my feelings badly! :( I just feel hated when all I try to do Is love him! I don't HAVE to give him fresh fruits and veggies everyday! I don't have to buy him expensive new toys and a good big cage. I don't have to leave the heater, radio and light on for him! But I do! Because I care about him! My dad wants to get rid of him because of his biting and part of me would like to. But I just cant give up. If he goes back, what would happen to him? They didn't care about him! They abused him! Where would his next home be? Some person who shoves him in a budgie cage with another bird? I need help! I just want to know how I can have him not bite me. :(

Get yourself some thick work gloves, and wear them on your hands when you are feeding him, dealing with him, etc if anyone else is coming around. Don;t give up on him yet, he is still trying to work things out with this massive change in his life. Remember, he had four years of neglect before this, so you have a lot to make up for. He is having to adjust his whole world view! He's not necessarily mean, just communicating the only way he knows how. By wearing thick gloves, you don't get hurt, and he does not get rewarded with your squawking in pain and withdrawing. Patience, and being more stubborn than him, and I bet in time you will win his trust.

I know how easy it is to take things like this personally but it's a big change for him as well and there's no way he can understand that this change is for his own good, or that you're spending a lot of money on him, or sticking up for him when your dad suggests getting rid of him. It's just a new situation that he's trying to make sense of. Try to think of it as a puzzle to unlock rather than an animal that doesn't like you.
