Not sure if this tree is safe

Eddie just took a chunk out of a small indoor tree we have. We have had it for many years. Eddie never chews anything, nor can he actually get to this plant usually. But today I had a chair siting by it and he flew over and took a bite out of one of the leaves. I can't find any information about it online, it says 'Covette' on the side of the pot so I assume that is what it is. Anyone know if this tree is safe? It was a pretty big chunk and I can't find it so I assume he must have swallowed at least some of it! His mouth smells like the plant now and I'm a bit worried.

Hey Ben, I've searched a ton of websites concerning toxic and non toxic plants trees and shrubs, none containing any reference to "corvette" maybe they made the pot the plants in, anyway maybe you can take a pic and post it, might be a junior botonist that can identify it for us.......

this website seemed to have the best list of safe and not trees and plants, good for future reference.......

Yea, I'm not sure if covette is actually what it is but that was the only label on it. Anyway, I did take some pics, but my internet just died so was just waiting for it to reconnect

. Here it is, its a pretty pathetic little plant. You can see where the li'l bugger took the chunk out lol.

Funny you mention that, I have been getting quite a few references to 'umbrella trees' while searching for covette. I hope its not though, cuz it says the wood is dangerous. Doesn't say anything about the leaves though.

When I was searching through the internet I read on another forum of someone who had a rabbit and birds that would eat the leaves, another person was arguing it was poisionous though

So I'm not completely sure...I'm going to keep looking..

Ben, This Website gives descriptions of symptoms occuring for different types of plants. It does say the whole umbrella tree plant is toxic, including the leaves.

Schefflera aka Umbrella Tree, Starleaf, Australian Umbrella Tree Toxic Principle: Entire Plant, Saponins, Falcarinol, Calcium oxalate, Oxalic acid Clinical Signs: Dermatitis, Vomiting, Leukopenia, Loss of coordination, Irritation of mouth, lips, and tongue

Thankyou Beilana, you have helped greatly. I also hope that is not what it is. My mum seems to think it could be a rubber tree (its been here so long no one knows lol), in which case, It is only mildly toxic. If it is an umbrella tree though then I will have to watch carefully for any signs of illness. He regurgitates food a lot for me (but this is normal for him) so I will keep an extra keen eye out for actual vomiting as it will be hard to differentiate I would think.

I'm kinda worried now

I'm sure he will be ok! Although I am worried too.

Keep me posted if anything happens. Maybe you could ask your veterinarian also or take him to get checked out

I researched a bit more and one of the symptoms is Leukopenia so if it was the "umbrella plant" his immune system could be effected. Sweet potato can help to boost immunity if Eddie likes it

Yea, I just wish I knew exactly what the plant was. He has been regurgitating an awful lot, but only when I'm around. I think he is in some sort of breeding mood as he has been very grumpy lately. Thanks so much for your help Beilana I will see how he is in the morning and make a call to the vet if I need to.

Also, forgot to mention, the photo of the leaf I attached - he only did half of that and the rest was us while we were investigating the plant. This brings up the question - How much of a poisonous plant does a bird actually need to ingest for it to be a problem?

That is an excellent question! It probably depends on the bird and how much of the toxin was in that particular piece of leaf lol Which could vary..A LOT.

One time my grandma's bishon/shi-tzu dog got a hold of a chocolate bar. The dog ate the whole darn thing, including the wrapper, and was completely fine lol!

Eddie must REALLY love you if he is regurgitating for you! lol I've never seen a bird regurgitate for someone before, oh the gifts they give eh.

Its almost to a point where its too much, nearly every time he is hanging out with me now, he will do it. I think its just because he spends almost all his time with me. I try to get everyone else to socialize with him, but they're not doing it as much as I need them to

Unfortunately life gets busy and they have their own commitments. Even I have to schedule time for my birds now.

I once stepped on a frog by accident. My brother used to collect me tiny swamp frogs when we were young. One got out and ended up under my foot. Poor little thing, I was devastated lol.

HAHA she is also fearless against lizards, found her one or twice with lizard tails in her mouth. Poor little bluetongues that lived in our backyard never saw her coming. She has been nipped on the nose by them a few times lol. I always get worried about what she's gonna do when she comes across a big ol' brown snake. She is such a sook against any other animal, its just reptiles she goes after, must be instinct.

That poor little frog I would feel bad too, at least he is now up in froggie heaven

Where I am there aren't any snakes because its too darn cold. I once had a bear in my backyard, luckily Fizz didn't think it was lunch lol.
