I'm trying to convince my dad to let me get a green cheeked conure

Hi there, I really would like to get a green cheeked conure but my dad is saying "no more conures for us" because of our last nanday conure we had. Unfortunetaly our last nanday conure was brought up wrong and he plucked all his front feathers, and he had a biting problem, plus a poop problem. I'm trying to tell him that green cheeked conures arn't from the same "class" as sun conures, i'm wondering if you guys can tell me what's good and what's bad about green cheeks. The thing my dad is worried about is him being mean and the screaming.

But i already have 2 things to counteract those bad habits. 1st: i bought a taming and training program from a website called www.Birdtricks.com (you guys should check it out, i totally tamed my parrotlet with this program) That takes care of the biting and being mean and such, not to mention the guy has a technique to get rid of bad screaming problems. 2nd: I found a PERFECT breeder family who raises Green cheeks and other conures and amazons and such called www.pamperedpeeps.com (check that out as well!)and from the way they raise their baby's i just know that my green cheek wouldn't be mean, let alone if he was i have a training program and i know exactly what to do to get rid of any small nasty problems.

Well if you guys who have either had experience with green cheeks or have one right now could tell me what is good and what is bad about them tha'd be great!!!!! Cya, Jonathan(and Peeps)

Hello again Mrspy. I have to say that ANY bird has the potential to bite, scream, pluck, etc. There are ways to curve these behaviors and its great you are researching training methods

Green-cheek conures are wonderful companions. I have a 6 month old hand-raised GCC named Hiroshi. He is very noisy and moody. He is also very nippy but those are just the "bad" things about him.

He is a huge snuggle bug, He enjoys being with all members in my family, snuggling, scritching, preening. He is also very playful, silly and adventurous.

You say your last conure was brought up wrong. Was he adopted? What do you mean when you say "poop problem"? And when you say he had a biting problem, was it full on aggressive biting? or "beaking"?

My GCC Hiroshi nips A LOT, I have been trying to fix this behavior as best I can but as people have mentioned to me, it can be hormones, bonding, or just a phase. Most parrots will bite or go through hormonal phases when they start to mature. They can display some pretty strange behavior

Well i already have a very powerful solution to the nipping. Go to www.Birdtricks.com and that will solve all your problems. Thanks for the info btw, i'll keep that in mind. When i said my conure had a "poop problem" i mean that he had like really bad diarreaha. His "biting" problem was more of a nipping problem i guess, if he didn't like your looks he BIT! Well lemme see if i have this right, 1 family got him as a baby and then he went to another family, who gave him to a friend, who wasn't able to give him the care and attention he needed, and then who gave to me. Unfortunetaly we gave him too MUCH attention and then we gave him away because we were afraid he'd hurt our baby who hadn't been born yet.(he's 4 now ) I really wish we had him back cuz he was SO much fun!!!!

Yes, I'd 100% advise a green cheek conure. They're the quietest out of all of the other conures. Still noisy. In case you didn't know, GCC come in various colors. My favorite is the Fancy GCC.

The turquoise is a really nice one too. Saw one in my local pet store the other day. Very sweet.

I'd either like a pineapple mutation or a cinnamin mutation. or even maybe a yellow sided green cheek. So you think they would be a good pick eh? I listened to the videos of them screeching and seriously i was expecting a lot worse! I mean one vid said "listen to this before considering buying one" and i did and it wasn't so bad. do the green cheeked conures act clowny? I'd love it if they do. See i'm looking for one that will be loads of fun and even though i know every bird is different, i'd like for it to be in their basic behavior. thanks

Yes, all conures are clowny. Very cuddly birds as well!

Will you also consider Mini-Macaws or Rainbow Lories?

From the GCC's I have seen this is a big YES. Hiroshi will flip upside down, bob his head, roll around, go into sleeves, shirts etc. He is the biggest clown I've ever seen They seem to be natural born entertainers lol

Hey that's perfect! I can't believe how lucky i am, the setup for me is PERFECT. I've basically convinced my Mom that if i trained my gcc right that he wouldn't be at all like my last conure. Now i'm going to try and talk to my dad (yikes) Those rainbow lory's are beautiful!! Are they also clowny?? I don't think the minature macaw woulc fly.

My dear, I am sorry to pop your balloon but it is simply not true that 'training right' would completely eliminate the nipping in a conure. It just doesn't happen and anybody who sells you a training method guaranteeing this is not telling you the truth. All conures are nippy. ALL OF THEM! If you have a conure that never nips, you have a sick bird or the only exception in the conure world and go ahead and call Guinness Book of Records. As to your previous conure, was it a Nanday or a Sun? What happened to it? Did it die? Did you take it to the vet for the diarrhea? How long ago was this? I am asking because it could have had chlamydiosis and, if it did, the bacteria could still be in your house.

hypothetical question though: what if a baby conure just hatched and the shock and all was gone from the hatching and you weened it and played with it and handled it ALL the time, do you think it would still be nippy?

Btw, we got him in 2005 and he left us in late 2005
We got him from another family so don't think we wasted tons of money

IMO Yes I believe they would still nip. "beaking" is a natural behavior to explore their environment and often they "beak" a little too hard. Every conure I have been around whether they were hand-raised, played with all the time or un-tame have been nippy. And yes they do draw blood on occasion and, yes it hurts lol. GCC's seem to be especially nippy.

It should only stop you if your not willing to accept it. If nipping fingers, necks, ears, noses etc will be a problem and possibly cause you to give the bird away then I suggest to look into a different species. :red:

I think that even a conure can be trained not to nip. My parrotlet was very nippy and i tamed him. I'm not trying to say i know more about taking care of conures than you but i think i'd be able to tame it.
