Are banana skins toxic to conures? I've just tried giving the babies a taste of banana but they weren't interested, but, Chunky grabbed the skin. He was really enjoying chomping into it, but I have removed it as I don't know if it will harm him. Does anyone know?

I don't know for certain, but my Alexandrines have attacked the fruit bowl and stripped bananas naked in the past. They're still alive! :) I'll be interested to hear from anyone who knows the answer to your question.

Don't know, but wonder if the skin harbors residues of various chemical agents used during growth and shipping?

That's a good point. I hadn't thought of that.

The issue started long ago. Monkey urine on bananas carried some bacteria that would make parrots sick. I doubt it's as much of a problem now days. I'd be more worried about chemicals. i have fed wild bananas/plantains to my parrots and they all strip the skins to eat then insides. (not too many wild monkeys here in Fla)

The annoying thing was, he didn't want the banana itself, just the skin.

I give my boys banana in round slices, like coins, with the skin still on. They don't seem to eat the skin, but it does give them a way to hold onto the otherwise squooshy banana. And the bananas are organic so if they chew on the skins it's not a big deal anyway.

I tried your idea last night and this morning. Not too keen unfortunately. One or two chomps on the banana coins and they flew away :(

I think I'm starting to get paranoid that they aren't getting enough of the right things to eat.
