Rehoming?

No, I am not rehoming Sonic or Lilo, although sometimes they are little pains in the butt.... But no!

This thread is not about them.

I was just wondering what you guys thought about rehoming animals? I personally don't believe in rehoming unless its very vital to you, someone else, the animal, or other animals well being. I feel this way because when you adopt an animal, you have just taken in a living thing with feelings. It is up to you now to take care of and protect that being. But what do you guys think about rehoming an animal if you are annoyed with it or you have a macaw and there is a new baby/you work to much. Are there ways to take care of the animal without getting rid of it? Because I just wondered what will happen to it down the road. Thanks! I hope you are all having a great day by the way!

I'm totally fine with rehoming when a bird/animal goes to better place for him/her. All except one of my birds are adopted. I love and care for my fids, but with one rescue IRN I felt that he was just not in the right place. He came from a very difficult situation, and I absolutely had to rescue him. Now he is in a great "big bird" (macaw, amazons, CAG, U2 etc) family where he is very happy and adored by everybody. I think if you rescue (and have that feeling "if not me, than who else?") then you have to be ready to rehome the birds after you rehabbed and tamed them.

i agree that if its going to a better home and its going to have a better life then sure but if its already in an awesome home and loves its family then its not fair IMHO

Yes I agree with that, with Sonic, we are debating if we should get rid of him but he would go to a animal shelter. I don't like that idea. I think the only way I would get rid of him is of I found the best home for him. Other wise, I don't want to give up. If I give up on him, what about future rescue birds. Will I give up on them too when they need me? So, we will see what happens. Because I do want the best for him.

What is the reason you are thinking of rehoming him? Personally I see animal shelters as the last resort; they should be there only for lost animals, or animals saved from cruelty, not for people who made the choice to get a pet and are reconsidering. I do believe in rehoming when it is the best thing for the pet or the family, but I believe you should look into other options first, such as training, different schedule, even veterinary reasons a bird could be misbehaving.

He seems to not enjoy me and is pretty rude. He bites my and it hurts but he hurts my feelings more. I just don't want to give up on him and I hope he will end up liking me.

Unfortunately one of the core rules of owning birds is to never get your feelings hurt, so that is an area where you need to train yourself. These are wild animals, and Sennies are famous biters.

As for his behavior, passing on a biting bird is usually dooming them to a life of being in homes only a short time, which will only make it worse. Your sennie is an adult, at his age there is a good chance that this has happened to him many times already, which could be part of why he is biting. Consider the fact that his trust has been broken many times, and understand why he is not coming around as quickly as you would hope. The opposite could also be true, if he has had only one or two owners so far, it could be he is still mourning them.

Look for birdman666's behavior mod thread on biting and see if you can identify what kind of bites you are getting and take the steps he suggests. Also look into clicker training. This is one of those situations where likely you need to put some more effort and research into teaching your bird how to live with you instead of sending him off to live with someone else.

He has been doing clicker training but he kinda doesn't want to anymore. I will keep trying but I hope he will want to.

Unfortunately with any bird there's no guarantee. They are not like a dog or cat. Our grey loved my partner for 12 years and then one day out of the blue he decided our son was the light of his life. This didn't even make sense since he doesn't even like the birds, but there you go. Birds don't always make sense.

You can't expect miracles in such a super short period of time.

Continue working with him, continue working on trust building, perhaps even trick training. He may never be a cuddly bird, but would that truly matter?

Hey, I just noticed that you only had him for about 2 months - that way too short time to decide about anything.

You have to ask yourself if what is better for your bird? I really loved my IRN Riko and wanted to to keep him, but I sensed that he was not happy with my other birds and needed some bigger bird company. Just me wasn't enough to him - he was definitely looking out to chill with other birds, but they kept abusing him (and he was abusing my tiel).

I feel like he would be ok here. I give him lots of fruits and toys, I really hope he gets a new cage. When Lilo is down stairs on her play stand, he crawled over to her cage and sits on it. He is in a parakeet size cage. While Lilo is in a small macaw, big conure cage. I can tell he wants her cage. And he is very sweet when I come to see him. He just wants head scratches more that to learn new things...

You know...I see lists a mile long on several sites selling birds or trying to rehome them. Many times it's only been a few months with that owner for many reasons that they are getting rid of the bird. Much of the time I see that it is a lack of patience. I agree with you that birds have feelings, just they way they look at you sometimes can break your heart.

Many new comers trying parrots for the first time as pets suddenly realize that they are not cut out for it or parrot bites....not ever realizing the quality of patience and understanding the bird. It Kills me when someone can just up and get rid of a bird not realizing it has feelings. It's just a bird they say.

I often wonder what happens to the 100,000 parrots for sale that need rehoming across America and other countries....

I think re homing should be the last resort. Only extreme cases should be re homed such as:

I repainted and now the bird doesn't match the wall color.

I want to watch TV full time.

The bird can't open my beer.

The bird can't carry groceries in from the car.

It's Tuesday.

The bird won't stop pooping.

Yes. I feel like every animal needs a chance! Not just a second but a third, fourth, fifth chance. I know, I need to be patient with Sonic. He needs a fifth chance. I need to give him that chance. Maybe we should have named him Chance!

Haha yes! I have heard someone saying that my bunny takes up too much room in his cage. His cage was the size of a hamsters wayyyy to small. Some people forget about their pets!?!? Oh my, my pets would never let me forget them!

But seriously, I don't know how you forget your pet?!

Ha ha ha....Have you seen Home Alone....Home alone 2.....???? Does that ring a bell? I can just see my parrots pulling all kinds of funny stunts to would be home intruders....My my, what a cool movie prop that would be....I'll go make the pop corn....and crack open a brew, ( since my bird can't open it....or can he?)
