Can someone identify this bird?

The thing on the left next to the Grey. It's ghastly. Looks like something out of Jurassic Park actually.

Haha, the fellow in the photo does look a bit prehistoric, that's a gorgeous grey keeping him or her company.

Thanks for the species info, Wendy! Very cool birds.

What the hell is that??? Excuse my pun, but I seen something like that at the Halloween store, a bit scary, but cute as well.

I can see myself dressing up as a mad scientist, and having that bird on my shoulder. ( Cackling evil laugh) .

Seriously though, bird is probably very sweet natured. The Grey isn't afraid. Or maybe sitting still hoping the other bird doesn't eat him....

Not anywhere near as creepy as this one below...lol....aw it's just a hungry baby.

I'd imagine the Hornbills are messy fruit eaters like Toucans? You'd need a big outdoor aviary for sure!

Hornbills are primarily carnivorous. They were by far some of my favourite to work with when I was a zookeeper. Our three Southern Ground Hornbills were fed a diet of pellet, ground meat, and mice. Our Yellow Billed got pinkies, worms, and pellets with some fruit.

Very intelligent birds.

Here are some shots that I took while I was there.

Spectacular photographs, JokerGirl!!! Just WOW!!! :D

Since these birds' primary diet consists of meat, do their droppings have an odor?

Yes. Pretty badly actually. They also have lots of urates in their feces due to the high protein content of their diet. Made for a heck of time cleaning up after them.

Oh, and thanks :D

GULP! I only asked because I've once smelled Vulture 'droppings' up (too) close and personal....it was truly atrocious! :32:

Yeah, the vultures are pretty gross too. The two we were rehabbing would stress vomit anytime you entered their enclosure - talk about a truly horrific smell.

Amazing! Awesome photos, JokerGirl.

I would probably hesitate before asking those guys or ladies to step up! I'd have trouble handing out mice as treat rewards too.

Gorgeous hornbill! I'm vouching for a Silvery Cheek too :D

Jokergirl, great pictures! I'm a bit bias on it, but I love the pictures of the ground hornbills the most! Reminds me of volunteering at the zoo and being able to hand feed them, such a great moment

I can finally bring this video up into something! I might be getting a little too excited about this thread, Hornbills and Toucans are my favorite types of birds!
