Vaping

Is this okay for birds? It's all water vapor right?
The smell bothers me but my boyfriend is trying to quit smoking. Unfortunately for me I don't like the fruity smell,and he's going to be blowing giant vapor clouds in the house. Is this safe for birds? This... fruity vapor cloud junk. Haha.

I'm proud of him for trying to quit smoking though lol.

He does not smoke cigarettes in the house in case anyone would think he does.

My husband has worked at a vapor shop for over two years, and vapes inside of our studio apartment, and it has never shown any ill effect on any birds. Of course it isn't "healthy" to breathe in anything that isnt just air, whether it be cigarette smoke, or any other kind, but it's not like some second-hand water vapor is going to have long term damage. Assuming they arent living in a cloud of it 24/7. Lol. So maybe don't blow it in their faces.

I wouldn't do it in the vicinity of the cage, but I would imagine if he was doing it the other room it wouldn't be harmful. We used to burn incense in our bedroom and it never bothered Kiwi (who was in the living room). That vape 'smoke' isn't nearly as bad as incense smoke!

If he's doing it in the house, could I possible suggest he blows out the smoke outside of a window? It would make the smell in the house almost non existent of vapor. But I think doing it inside another room or directly opposite of your birds wouldn't be harmful too... it clears up pretty fast imo.

Personally Vape smoke makes me nauseous. I feel that it has ill health effects for people let alone pets. There is zero smoking of any kind tolerated around my house hold. We do not use fragrances or incense of any kind in my house because I fear any future side affects on Phoebe. We will occasionally burn candles, but only when Phoebe is in her room..the door is closed..and there's a draft stopper under it. I would feel horrible if something happened to my baby because she was subjected to something unnatural and outside her control. To me its just not worth the risk. One of the guys I used to work with would Vape before I got there..I finally told him it made me sick and my eyes would swell from all the smoke, I used to take my dog with me to work and didn't feel it was responsible for me to do so as long as a coworker was smoking. While I have not looked to find any hard core data that it is not safe for birds, the question you should ask is if its worth the risk. Personally if I question something at all I will error on the side of caution.

Thanks everyone I will take your advice and see if I can get him to use it somewhere else other than my room with my birds. (His vaping stuff just arrived in the mail this morning... oh lord maybe I should hide it while hes at work LOL)

@ solo vape smoke makes me sick too I don't like it and you can't see through all the clouds haha. I'll talk to my boyfriend about not using it in my room... He's stubborn though and usually thinks he's right about everything but we'll see.

Before he even purchased it I already told him DON'T USE IT NEAR MY BIRDS. Just because, even if it's not harmful if I was a bird I would be so annoyed by it.. The smell might irritate them too I'd personally think? But I dont know.

I am a Nurse with special training around smoking cessation products as part of my job. E-cigarettes are typically what most people are referring to when they talk about "vaping". Studies have shown that mice subjected to e-cigarette fumes suffer mild lung damage and become far more susceptable to respiratory infections. Their immune systems suffer the most and 2 out of 10 of the mice actually died in one study. For me this is enough to suggest the vapor would be harmful to birds. I would investigate and closely scrutinize the contents and additives of the cartridges he is using. Some of them actually contain oils that can coat the lungs and are considered more harmful than smoke. It's well known too that these products produce some of the same free radical damage that cigarettes do which would also be bad for a bird. To be safe, I would recommend hand washing after vaping and using the products outside of the home at a minimum, to ensure as little risk as possible to your birds.
Having said that, cigarettes only contain real tobacco in the first 1/8" of the product and the rest of it is paper sprayed with brown colored goo which has been laced with 7000, yes 7000 chemicals in ever-changing combinations. That paper is then shredded to look like tobacco. I found this shocking! Even one's clothing contains enough chemical residue to harm a child after smoking. Anyone who quits is doing the right thing for their own health and that of those they love.

Good points Shaunar...thats the problem with the e-cigs...there just isn't that much research.

I have said since they hit the market they will probably still be bad for you. Its not "just" water vapor....there are chemicals or something giving you that flavor and or nicotine that is in the vapor. its not just pure water.

Anything in my opinion inhaled through smoking is likely bad!
