Ive been considering what pet to get for a while now. Recently I decided that I was going to get a duck as a pet. I still really do like the idea, but I am having a very hard time finding exactly what Im looking for. Ducks also are pretty messy the way I understand it (it would need to wear a diaper). Also when they are alone without another duck then it always has to be with you. I can see how that could become an issue. Its also cool being able to take the duck with you where you go.

Then Im also thinking it might just be a better idea getting a bird (cockatiel or conure). Anyone have anything to add to help me with my decision?

I love ducks! Had them and loved them but they need so much space and care. I wouldn't have one now but am so glad I had them! I love my conure and grey. They are the best, go with me where I go, happy to be at home when they can't go with me (as long as I spend time with them when I am home), for me they are the perfect pets.

Ducks and chickens = outdoor pets. I've had both and would never attempt to have them inside.

Do you have any water on your property for the ducks? It's not "needed" however they are water birds.

I think you'd be much happier with a conure or a cockatiel. Ducks are great, in the great outdoors. As Tom mentioned, a body of water is not required but it makes for happier ducks.

I've never had a duck that talked, I have three parrots that quack! :)

You should go visit cockatiels and conures to help you decide, one may choose you! Have fun with your new adventure. Please let us know what you decide.

It really helps to know what State or Country you are posting from, it just helps with answers.

At present, if you live in North America and with in any of the major migration flyways. I would not recommend any outdoor birds or waterfowl. Many States in the mid-west to the Pacific are under restrictions resulting from Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) H5N2 outbreaks that occurred this Spring. Whether the Fall will bring a return to the spread of H5N2 as migration begins or if it has died-out as a result of the Summers heat is yet unknown.
