Hello, spawn of Mimsy01 reporting in... I only registered because it appears we are going to have a female parakeet coming in VERY shortly... Possibly long before Mimsy is even capable of being awake yet. So I'd rather just deal on my own instead of having her be cranky all day.

We were aware that this bird may possibly be need in a home, and so we offered in the case of it not being able to get one; we had hoped our offer to take it in would have gone un-noticed after 3 weeks of no further information. Just THIS MORNING I was told they were going to be on their way TODAY!

Talk about forewarning.

Anyhow, since I don't have Mimsy awake currently and I don't want to cause any issues between birds... How will I need to quarantine these birds? I know you are supposed to keep them separate for something around 3 weeks, or maybe more.

The GCC, Foofanny, can fly but generally will not unless startled into doing so. However, the starling... Zeki can and does fly constantly. And I am fairly certain he's curious enough to throw caution away and get as close to the new bird as possible.

Are bars good enough for keeping a bird 'quarantined'? Or do I need to take it to a different room? I would imagine it is the latter, but if it isn't necessary I really don't want to do so. We have limited space as far as sending her to a different room. But I can definitely make do if that is indeed necessary.

Granted, she isn't coming from a totally terrible conditions it appears; not like petco. But still, we don't really know these people and there could be anything.

I just need advice without extensively of researching it as I normally would, because I don't have the time it appears. O.O

Tyvm in advance.

The new bird DEFINITELY needs to be in another room with no contact with your current birds for 30 days.

I would get it to an avian vet as soon as possible for a check up to make sure it's not ill or carrying diseases your current birds might catch.

I'm not super familiar with quarantining, but I have heard people say you need to change clothes and wash your hands and arms well in between every time you interact with the new bird and before you interact with you current birds.

Hello spawn of Mimsy01 :D. Is she awake yet?? lol
Short notice is right  surprise! Since "real" quarantine would require a different building, different clothing, sanitized shoes, shower, etc... the best you can do in your home is to keep her in a different room and limit the contact. After cleaning, change clothes and wash arms and hands. The reason for that is diseases can be airborne when dried feces or feather dust is stirred up into the air (even an unseen amount). For more peace of mind so you don't have to 'worry' for the whole 30 or so days, I would make an appt. with the avian vet asap for disease testing ideally, or at least the basic exam with bloodwork. Good luck! We love pics!

Alright, so different room it is. We figured that, Mimsy has just woken up to the unexpected news.

We may not be able to get it to a vet within 30 days, but we can definitely do the quarantining up to a different room. It will just have to be upstairs for awhile. Which is okay. That's where I sleep, so it will still get a good amount of attention. We are thinking she will be wild, as they said she bites. So a taming process will have to happen... *Sigh*

We don't think she's been around other birds, but we are not going to risk it.

Thank you!

Ugh, I'm awake I'm awake!

My spawn lives upstairs, so she will have a guest it looks like. :)

I "think" this has been an only bird for I don't know how long. Hopefully we will find out when they get here. If so that will make me feel a little better. If I got the story right, she was given to a women with small children several months ago and it didn't work out.

Avian vet is not in the same town as us, so we will have to figure that out. My regular vet office was the only one who saw birds here, but the one who saw birds retired, so now we have to go to another town. I haven't gone there yet with Foo, so don't know what they are like.

Well that solves that. Turns out he won't be needing to come here anyway.

They're so reliable huh? <_<
