Question about GCC foot injury.

My girlfriend and I have a Cinnamon Green Cheek that is a little over a year old and he sustained an injury to his left leg front small toe to the point where it's off to the side instead of right beside the front longer toe. We took him to the vet and they said it isn't broken but could have been an injury that will result in permanent nerve damage.

They wrapped his toes up in a bandage, gave us some pain medication for him and said keep the bandage on for 5 days then bring him back. We did this and afterwords they removed the bandage but his toe is still off to the side. He moves around just fine, climbs and plays with toys the same way he usually does but his toe just seems to chill off to the side.

It has a healthy pink color to it and his feet are warm and there is no bruising or weird looking swelling to it so I'm just concerned the vet may have missed something. Anyone else deal with this and may know what is wrong? Or is this just the result of how the injury may have permanently disfigured him?

Welcome to the forums. :)

Did the vet do an actual X-ray on your GCC's foot to determine that it was not broken somewhere?

As long as your conure is acting fine otherwise, I wouldn't be too awfully concerned. If he in fact has permanent damage (and it sounds quite minor to me), he'll learn to adjust fine with it. :)

Do you know how the injury occurred, and how long ago?

They didn't X-ray because She [the vet] said that due to no appearance of internal bleeding or major swelling the injury was most likely a aabad sprain or possibly minor fracture but because of how tiny GCC feet are the most they could do without major surgery was bandage it. They told us regardless of what they did the damage would most likely be permanent and to just keep him off the leg as much as possible to relieve pressure and let it heal as much as possible. We let him walk around on towels for better grip and he could only play with non grippable toys ie... Colored pegs, chewable paper (the approved kind) and the like.

We believe it happened on the same day we took him to the vet. Since we always monitor them during feeding and playing. His feet looked very awkward that day so we immediately rushed to the vet clinic. We think we fell off his cage incorrectly amd landed on the hard wood floor since we wee visiting family and it was new territory for him.

Give it some more time. If his one toe is currently a tad bit distorted, yes, there is a chance it may stay like this, especially if there was any kind of fracture, and especially if the bones fused together incorrectly.

You said he's already coping with it fine, and I'm sure he will continue to do well. I doubt he even realizes there's anything 'wrong' with his one toe. :)

Alice has a toe that goes the wrong way - should face backwards, actually faces forward with the nail pointing up. It doesn't bother her at all, and she's a right one for climbing and dangling. As long as the bird is not in pain, a crooked toe isn't going to be a big deal.
