Hello everybody! So I have a question that I'm hoping those of you with similar situations can weigh in on.

My girlfriend and I are planning on moving in together (yay!). She has a 7 year old green cheek (Tiki) and 5 parakeets that would be coming along with her. After spending so much time with Tiki, I've felt the itch to get a bird of my own. Through multiple visits to bird stores, I think I've decided on a Hahn's Macaw.

My question is: can the Hahn's and green cheek get along? I understand different birds will have different personalities, so I'm not assuming they will like each other, but will the difference in size be a non-starter? They wouldn't share a cage and would only be out together when supervised.

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

If there is a fight, Tiki will be starting it, but the Hahns, if he chooses, will finish it! Most likely will not be one of your over the top romantic evenings!

I think that there's nothing wrong with you getting a Hahn's if you're prepared to have them out separately and always supervise them if they are out together. Anytime you have two different beak sizes there is a risk. I was worried about my conure and Ringneck. We almost had a toe incident a year ago that still makes me woozy. So just be diligent and careful! If you can, it'd be great to get the bird from a place where it has been socialized with small birds. Otherwise just take it slowly and go from there, and make sure to practice proper quarantining!
