Hi all
here in nz I'm struggling to find dried beans to make a bean and rice mix with

Is it safe to use canned beans in brine as a substitute so long as I rinse them off well ???

No, the beans will have absorbed the sodium and this is very bad for birds. Do you have a dry bean mix for soups in NZ? If so, you can soak over night in water. Rinse, then boil for about 20 minutes, rinse and serve.
