I have recently come into ownership of a wild caught Amazon. (In reality he owns me) He still has his government band. I have tried on my own to find out the year he was imported and so has my Avian vet. Both of us found nothing. This Amazon was surrendered and there is very little and sketchy background history. I would just LOVE to know how old he could be or at least the closest estimate I can get. Any suggestions or direct contacts to find out his import year would be AMAZING!!!

**I tried searching for threads before posting, but nothing popped up. I'm assuming this has been talked about a lot before :p

I believe that I have read that it is really hard to find any information since the import facilities closed down. I also have a wild caught Amazon that I would love to find info on, but have never been able to find anything here in Canada either.

The last Amazon that owned me, that was imported, pasted near 25 years ago. Even at that point, newly imported parrots was quickly becoming rare. Buyers had already begun avoiding purchasing newly imported parrots and that trade was crashing. At the same time, North American Breeders had been offering fledged parrots and those parrots were sweethearts. Easy sale, and yet another cause of the import trade crashing.

It has been a very long time since I have even seen a government band. Most traders and pet stores would remove them because they did not want to have their parrots associated with being imported. In addition, Vets would recommend removing the bands to avoid it being catch and serious damaging the leg.

In all honesty, there is little likelihood of finding connecting documents, since they would have been specific to the import station. Unless that facility still exists and the records are still there. Still possible that someone may remember the number system. But, remember that at best that would be the import year, not the age of the parrot itself.

Get your Amazon as healthy as possible and work with your Vet to get a 'feeling' of his age.

Even with the passage of near 25 years, I can tell you that the Loving Depth of an Amazon that had suffered being imported, lost of Human family after Human family and finding a for real, for even home is a warmth that has no limits. I miss her as much today, as than. Love your Amazon!

I've read you can contact your local fish and game agency, but I haven't yet done it myself for my Sydney.

This link gives you some information as to where you bird passed through and a bit more of what I mentioned.

I tried locating the California fish and game since he was imported via that state. One of their offices got back to me and wanted his first owner and the port he came in....which there is no way of me knowing. So that is far as I got.

Thank you for your response! The vet told me he is at least 35 years old? Would that be right with the last year of legally imported birds? Or would he be closer to being at least 25 years?

He has been seen by 2 avian vets and he is pretty good health wise thankfully and is definitely being spoiled. The vets think he is about 35, or not much older.
