How do parrots react to construction noise and vibration

Hi,

We have small to medium-sized parrots such as cockatiels, lovebirds, conures, Quaker parakeets and an Indian Ringneck. Some of the cockatiels are quite sensitive to noise and other disturbances and have fairly frequent night frights. We live out in the country, and the existing well doesn't give us much water. We'd like to drill a new well in the hopes that it would yield more water because some of the neighbors with deeper wells get better flow from their wells. Will the birds tolerate the vibration? The well drilling might last 1-2 weeks, I believe. Thanks!

The level of vibration is dependent on the diameter of the Drill Casing, the type of Drill Head used and most importantly what rock layers are below your area and how deep you need to go. Rock layers at or very near the surface will transfer vibration until the drill head has passed on and into separate /different layers.

Since I have no idea where in the huge World you are! It is impossible to answer your question. I would recommend that you actually speak to a couple of Drilling Contractors in your area. Once you get specific information that is specific to your area you can make an informed determination what action you need to take.

Commonly, the only issue (noise) during the drill process it the Diesel Engine, the Drill Driver and the Pump(s).

NOTE to Moderators: This Thread would likely get a greater readership if relocated to another Sub-Forum.

It will really depend on your individual birds. I'm my experience with my current birds as well as others over the years, I haven't really had issues with my birds freaking out over much. It does largely depend on individual personality though. If I had to say that any of my birds are sensitive to any kind of disturbance, it would be my female English Budgie. I can't even take her to the vet without her blowing a bunch of feathers. Everyone else here is fine if a bomb goes off.

Thanks Sailboat;). This thread was more appropriate in Questions and Answers.

We have been laying new flooring this week, and while the birds are in different room, they haven't seemed to mind any of the noise from the saw or the air compressor. I think the chicken has been way more concerned with the fact that she has been spending a lot more time in get cage this week than anything else. I've just been too worried about what could be on the floor if she were to get down until they've been swept and moped. I would rather her be mad than hurt.

Hi,

Thanks to all of you for answering! I had not checked this forum for so long that I had forgotten about it, and I don't recall receiving an email notification when someone answered. I must not have set the settings to get notifications.

We haven't decided yet whether or not to drill a new well. We tried talking to the local contractors, and all of them say that it is a very loud process. We had to make a new septic system here a few years ago and one conure ended up plucking her chest bare. Who knows whether the commotion caused this, but we haven't been able to get her to stop plucking ever since. Water is a bit scarce around here lately, and one home nearby had to drill 3 wells before hitting any water (according to what people say).

Thanks in advance for any more replies. I'll see if there's a setting on this forum so that I can get email notifications.

Probably depends more on the proximity of the drilling to the house. I would imagine 15 yards away it would be a problem, 45 yards away not so much.
