I grew up with primarily wood heat and a budgie... He lived a good 12 years and alwas seemed healthy, despite living in the same room with the wood stove. I would think if you have a good clean flue, no major smoke events, aren't burning any chemically treated wood and and make sure the bird never gets the chance to get burned by flames or hot metal/bricks it should be OK... But that's from my experience not any other knowlwdge... Also, we had an air-tight vermont-castings stove, not a fireplace.

Burning only natural wood, not those fake logs, making sure that your fireplace is clean and well maitained ( burning wood creats a residue in the the chimmny called creosote) which depending on the amount the fireplace is used should be cleaned professionally every few years, always being sure the flue is open before starting the fire, also making sure there is either a glass or chain screen that covers the front of the fireplace thoroughly to prevent any accidents, and installing a carbon monoxide detector near the fireplace should makes things pretty safe if you chose to use that heating method, I'm sure there will be more suggestions on the subject, hope some of these helped :)

i love having fires as does my hubby, we have our fireplace cleaned every two years, only burn natural wood and have screens and glass doors, so we should be okay...thanks
