conure going crazy over mineral stone

Hi!

So I have a greencheek conure, and except for being beautiful and waking me up by flying on my back in the morning he has a pink mineral stone apple taste and he just goes mad about it, eating it non-stop, rubbing his head till the white around his eye is pink and just tearing it apart.

Is it normal? might that indicate some deficiency he is trying to fix?

My amazon has a mineral block he goes crazy over too. Not all the time, but once a week or so, I'll catch him chomping it up like no one's business. It gets all over his face and looks hilarious.

What is your birds diet like? I would find the likelihood of a nutritional deficiency driving his behavior low. In my experience, some parrots really like gritty stuff and chomping on things like that. Part may actually be instinctual. In nature, parrots native to the amazon (including some conures) naturally consume mineral rich clay in their diets. Not to mention, as their beaks grow constantly, chewing hard things helps keep the beak trim and healthy.

I think as long as he isn't excessively eating the mineral block it's probably fine You can always ask your avian vet their opinion too and I would also talk to the vet if your bird seems to be eating the block an excessive amount as that could be indicative of a problem.
