What do you guys line your cage with?

I've been using newspapers but recently decided to sew some together that I can just toss in the washer. However, I'm learning that using a fragrance free detergent leaves me with the poo smell. So now I'm back to the drawing board. I am not a fan of newspapers because I find myself using so many pages just to try to keep the tray clean. So I'm looking for an economical and practical option.

I have found newspaper to be the most practical for a traditional cage. Some folks use crushed medium such as walnut shells or corncob. Very critical to keep such substances out of their beaks!

Another alternative is to use plastic sheeting directly below the cage. I do this with some very large flight cages on legs. Any big-box hardware store sells various sizes of painters plastic. This might work with a traditional cage, you could either line the removable pan or remove completely and anchor the plastic to the legs.

Frankly I have never considered a washable material as my birds are fairly large and messy; would be hard duty for the washer!

I use newspaper for most, paper towels or printer paper if I have poop concerns. If it's a smell problem, toss some vinegar into the wash with them.
