We have found a 20-8 parrot fledgling with full paralysis. He cannot move his legs at all and has minimal movement of wings. I have never seen this before! He has until Friday to improve otherwise he will go to God because that isn't a life for any animal. Thought maybe a spinal injury. It must have occurred for a while because he has no leg muscles. Is currently being treated with pain relief incase there spinal swelling/bruising and antibiotics.
Thought?

What does 20-8 mean? 20-28wks old?
Ive never seen this because Im not around many parrot chicks but I would assume that the same goes for any animal, including humans. It could be something neurological, a birth defect, or its possible there was a fracture high on the spinal chord like you mentioned. I agree that your decision is a good one though, and sadly doubt that it will show any improvement. Hopefully he just goes peacefully. :(

There are many possible causes and all would require the attention of an Avian Vet's involvement. Thank-you, for bringing in this needy Parrot and providing it comfort. Please seek out an Avian Vet and take the Parrot to them classified 'Emergency!'

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Have you taken this poor bird to an avian vet, or are treating with available medications? There may be a chance for rehabilitation, but only an avian vet can properly determine the condition.

20-8 is a type of ring neck here in Australia. Very common where I am. I'm working at a vet this week so I've been instructed to bring it in each day for a dose of pain relief and antibiotics to see what helps. He has increased movement of his wings since his first injections this morning . It's so strange!

Okay, you're at the Vet's office daily helping and/or training, correct? Has the Vet X-rayed, run a blood screen or any other tests?

I'm guessing something since he is providing medication(s).

Best wishes that this helps!

Is the vet an avian specialist? Any idea of the cause?

She isn't an avian vet but is very thorough. Friday was going to be the cut off day if there was no improvement but since that time has had 0.1mg of meloxicom and 0.1mg of baytril per day. He can now flap his wings and weakly clench feet. Has a pain reflex in feet now as well. We are attempting physio and hydrotherapy to build up the leg muscles while continuing pain relief. Other than that it will be a waiting game.

We thought it could have been caused by falling out of the nest? We have no clue though.

I am so happy to hear of improvement thanks to your dedication. Thanks for considering some extra time and effort!!

Sometimes the plight of wild animals can seem so overwhelming, sometimes we can work wonders one creature at a time.

It's a hard situation because in Australia wildlife is free, therefore vets and practises are giving their resources away and generally don't want to treat them or not to the full extent. If it had been my own parrot I would have tried for longer but had to draw a line somewhere. We now have a baby red Cap parrot in care. So cute :D
