Does anyone have experience in taking your parrot from Canada to United States?
I have to go visit a friend in US for a 2-3 weeks and I really do not want to leave my amazon parrot here in Canada with someone else:(. I did some research and apparently I have to fill out a form, get a vet's certificate, and quarantine him for 30 days!!! 30 days!! That is just crazy.
Are there really no other ways?

That actually sounds like the easiest international
Import process EVER. Have you researched the requirements to take him BACK to Canada with you?

Just to add to your potential issues. It also will depend on where you plan to travel in the United States (which States). At present, you will want to avoid visiting parts of the following States: Wisconsin, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama and Montana. Each State listed above has had active case(s) of H5N2 Avian Influenza with Northern Wisconsin being the most restrictive. At present this will more likely restrict you returning to Canada if you visit includes any of the above States.

30 days is a standard quarantine prior to any international travel. As my good friend stated that is not that out of the questions, since most of us follow that with the introduction of a new Parrot to our homes.

CITES is an International Regulation (mainly European Union based) that has been agreed to by nearly all Country's Worldwide on the restriction of transporting Birds. Although the regulations target 'breeding stock' they also regulate Companion (pet) Parrots. Prior to 2 January 2017, the International travel with Pets has always had restrictions in place, since that day, the restrictions have become ever tighter.

If you are planning a trip within the next 30 days, you will likely not have enough time to complete all the paperwork and have the required testing and results by your Certified Avian Vet (CAV) completed in time. If you have been activity seeing your CAV at least yearly, your CAV's historical documents will be of great help. You will need to provide your CAV with both Canadian and United States documents for you CAV to complete and sign. Note: There is very specific time frames that the CAV documents are useful, if I recall correctly its 30 to 60 days. That means from the signed date on the CAV document it is only good for that specified time period. If you exceed that time period, you will be required to obtain a new document to return to Canada.

As stated in the above Post, you will need documentation for entering the United States and also, returning to Canada. Keep all receipts covering all purchases in the United States as a means of documenting your travels! This will help greatly in assuring the Canada Government that you have not traveled in the States provided above.

The land crossing States to and from Ontario are Minnesota, Michigan and New York. At present, the document requirements of those States are near the same, i.e. none have specific species restrictions in place.

If at all possible cross in and out of Canada at the same crossing or as part of your document set, pre-state your exit /re-entery locations. Example: I will exit Canada at the far Eastern Ontario /New York crossing and will be return (target date) at the far Western Minnesota /Ontario. Thus your paperwork has a timeline and general travel plan. FYI: I would strongly recommend that you avoid travel in any of the noted States above - H5N2 hot spots!

The paperwork is not that difficult, there are just very specific time lines and document signature /date requirements that are needed. NOTE: The Vet must be a CAV for travel into the United States! The Internet is a great source both for Canadian and United States documents.

NOTE: You will want to watch: Avian Influenza N5N2 2017 Outbreaks and Travel Restrictions before and while you are travel out of Canada!

Totally not worth it for a short trip, and quarantine stations are a nightmare for your bird. You'll be better off boarding...

The Canadian - US Boarder is totally different than with Mexico!

The Northern Boarder requires an 'In Owner's Home' Quarantine confirmed by your CAV, which about center of the Quarantine period, a complete Avian Examination with full Blood Screens and gram stain is completed. Commonly run at the Vet's Clinic to maximize the travel period.

If the newest version of CITES is in forced in North America - this could end-up being standard just to move between States. A ways-off, but the government is slowly working to implement CITES in the United States.

If you have purchased a Parrot hatched after 1, January 2017 and you did not get Hatch Day Paperwork from the Breeder or Pet Store, you had better go back and get it now!!!
