I tend to scrub the parts of my birds cage down with clean water, but I'm having trouble with her rope perches. Wich probably need a good cleaning by now. Any advice?

If you wish to continue to use only clean water, I would recommend that you remove the perches from the cage and soak them in hot water. Depending on the length of time it has been in place and volume will effect the length of soaking!

Drying perches is best done in bright sunshine!

FYI: Staying along the clean water side - consider a steamer!

There's a spray product called Avi-clean or Poop Off, they have ammonia in them and I don't know what else, really helps dissolve caked on parrot boons. You might have to get a bit aggressive to clean off the solids, then use dilute bleach to disinfect. Then they must dry completely. Out in the sun would be the best. Once they are perfectly dry all the chlorine from the bleach will be gone and they will be safe to use.

One of the occasional problem with a 'free spirt' Parrot is that one will come across hard dry boons on a hard floor! One of the neatest tools that Lady Boats has taught me is the use of a slightly up-moisture 'Baby Wipe!' Fold in half, let sit on the boon for an hour or so and when you come back, its like a quick wipe and lift. Just like a found fresh surprise!

Everyday for the last 5 years, I've been using a solution of 50% water, 50% white vinegar with 3 squirts of dawn soap. For hardened poop, I would soak a paper towel in the solution and leave it on the area for 10 minutes to soften it up. I clean the rest of the cage using the same solution in the meantime. I come back to the hard poop, it wipes right off. Perches with a rough, grainy texture I'd scrub in hot water and soap. I clean these periodically unless it's been pooped on. I place those kinds of rough perches strategically higher so it never gets pooped on since it's harder to clean.

Health-wise there have been no problems with my sun conure and 2 parakeets. I think it's pretty safe. Keeps away the spiders too (or so I'd like to think).

I think boomboom has the receipe. I also own a saltwater tank and use a mixture of white vinegar and water to clean all the pumps... vinegar is organic so it's harmless.
