I remember last year someone mentioned some vetenary research about the importance of exercise as a tool to expand parrots lifespan. It was mentioned it would be published this spring.

I have been googling and have not found anything. I also tried to find the thread, where it was mentioned, but have not been able to.

I would be very grateful if some of you knows what I am talking about and if you could tell me, where I can find this research, I would be most appreciative :)

I believe that you are referencing to the Thread that I either started or Posted to regarding the importance of Parrots learning to Fledge and teaching older Parrot's to fly as a means of assuring a greater likelihood of a longer life.

That writing referenced studies that had been targeted to complete in time for the Spring 2017 Convention(s) of the Association of Avian Veterans and Exotic Animals and that it /they would be scheduled as part of the Conference's Research Presentations. I will admit that Life got busy and I did not attend this year's convention(s). In addition, the Avian and Exotic groups that had historically shared conventions split apart. The result was that numerous presentations did not occur. I will speak with my CAV during our upcoming visit in August regarding what happened to the presentations and what are the future plans of AAV regarding presentations that did not occur in 2017.

Regarding the study: AAV senior members had noted a decline in the life of Parrots, especially mid to larger Parrots along with the heighten increase in Cardio-Vasular failure as a cause of death. The noted variation between those Parrots that continued to have little or no problem with their Cardio-Vasular system and those Parrots passing early was a combination of healthier diets and flight.

The early discussions from the 2016 conventions was that there is likely a connection and that encouraging owners of younger Parrots to let them Fledge and work at including healthier diets should be talking points during examinations. Also, that with older Parrots, speaking to the owners about increasing their Parrot's activities and also including healthier diets should also be a part of discussions with those owners. As part of the discussions was concerns that younger and middle age parrots need to receive a more detailed examination of their Cardio-Vasular system as part of a well Parrot exam and prior to recommending increase activities.

Hope that this helps!

Thanks for revisiting the info, Steven. I think studies like that are very important, as they can have a huge impact on the health and lifespan of our parrots. The importance of exercise and a good diet cannot be overstated, though sadly it often remains overlooked.

Thank you Steven. That is what I was looking for. Is there anywhere on the web or somewhere I can purchase info on these studies?

The reason I am asking, is that here in Denmark a group (sponsered by the importer of Zupreem) is trying to teach parrot owners, that the only thing, that matters is diet.

I am in an another group, who is promoting a more hollistic view on parrot health and we are promoting flight clubs, where we gather a lot of people and parrots in indoor riding arenas.

The other groups last "assult" is to claim, that this is dangerous.

I am therefore very interested in published articles in the avian community on this subject. The only thing written to date is "just" different vets own opinion, that exercise is important. If a study shows exercise has an impact on lifespan, that will help our cause and show that exercise is actually important.
