Rio (Yellow sided conure) sadly no longer with us
So I'm stuck in a bit of a dilemma at the moment.

I'm still not fully decided on whether to get myself a new bird after losing Rio to some mystery illness and Ozzy to his spooking and breaking his own neck.

Saying how unsure I am I still have the cage constructed and but I have come into contact with 2 people. One is selling a 3 year old black capped conure, I have no other info right now but have got their phone number so I can call to ask about tameness and what-not. The other I have seen is someone selling Pearly conures, I know these are parent reared with some human interaction and are given a full health check (but I would take to a vet anyway for a check-up having learnt my lesson with Rio) especially as I found I'm about 25 minutes drive away from the country's leading CAV!

Both of these birds cost the same, the pearlys should be ready to go to their homes in a couple weeks and the black cap is 3 so good to go. I'm leaning towards the pearlys at the moment due to the breeder being recomended to me by a lot of people on a facebook group and finding out that pearly conures are vulnerable according to conservation studies. Both of these birds cost the same price so there's nothing between them with regards to that.

I think I'm going to take a look at them but does anyone have any tips on what to look for with private sellers? Also does anyone have any tips for overcoming that wave of hesitation? I have a couple mental health issues so that definitely is adding to my hesitation

Big thanks in advance everyone!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Your hesitation is absolutely normal and expected given the loss of two birds. While I have no experience with either species, perhaps you can visit both and see if either one "chooses" you. Or, you might have a clear favorite after spending some time with them.

It is customary for the seller to offer a health guarantee, but it may be extremely short, measured in days. Taking your new friend to the esteemed CAV right away may offer some comfort. As with all living beings, a seemingly healthy individual can take a turn without warning. Hopefully the odds will be far better this time!

Yes I was thinking exactly that. With any bird I get I plan on sorting their insurance and booking a vet visit before I even leave the breeder.

I have actually given a call to what appears to be a very professional and large breeder (they appear to supply most birds to stores in the country so they can't be bad) ad am going to visit on friday to take a look. Funnily enough, now that I've called them I'm excited. time to see if one of their birds claims me as their own. I'll prepare the perches tomorrow just in case!

Luckily as you can only visit by appointment I'll be more comfortable talking to the person there and be able to get some advice and details. Also they sell hand reared meaning an easy taming process. Though I think nothing will be quite like Rio just flying over to me

Sounds like a great plan! Let us know how it goes!!

Nothing will be quite like Rio just flying over because you'll never replace Rio. Think of this as getting a new family member, new memories that build on the experience of past great times. I fondly remember *every* bird who passed, and you're a lot younger than me when I got my first bird. Hopefully your next bird will help process the grief of losing Rio.

my assumption with Rio is that he was possibly ill from when I got him and that was part of why he tamed so easily

I wouldn't want the same bird anyway

I will let everyone know when I'm done
