its bonfire night in the uk on friday, so lots of fireworks all weekend! my dog is frightened of them so i've been playing a firework sound cd for him, but beau and mimsy (macaw and cocokatoo) get freaked out with the cd. i'm worried cos its gonna get louder on friday and more sporadic. any suggestions on keeping them calm would be great. thanks x

During our celebration in July we have tons of fireworks also. I play the stereo or TV kind of loud to help drown out the sound and keep drapes pulled so know flashes can be seen. Dogs and birds did fine.

My dogs were going mental last night, I do so hate this time of year for all my animals.

The neighbours with no children are clearly still impressed with "pretty lights" and easily amused but anyway, I digress...

Cal is currently unconcerned but I will be putting on loud music for everyone in the house as the TV loud freaks Cal when there's gun fire or explosions lol.

I also had a dog who was terrified, to the point where she'd pee on the floor. Loud music, or TV works...She sometimes went into her kennel, as smaller spaces make them feel safer.

keeping the cats in, getting the dogs calm in preperation! the smaller birds don't seem bothered at all by the noise, i put a blanket over them last year and all went well, this is beau amd mimsy's fist november 5th! it doesn't help when people let fireworks off for no reason (one this morning in broad daylight) pointless! its not that i'm anti firework, they're pretty and all.... just stick to the 5th!

This is one day of the year I absolutely dread.
Fireworks usually start of about 7pm here in JHB South Africa.
Mishka's night cage is in my bedroom. I sit with her till about 12am, with the tv on, playing and talking to her. I know the noises frighten her, and try to distract her. When the big explosion occur, I say to her, where are the boom booms, and try make a joke of it, eventually she saying the boom booms are gone

Below is a short link pertaining to keeping your pets safe during guy fawkes.

What bugs me most about it is the fact that fireworks cause so much harm.

I don't think I've "oohed" and "ahhed" since I was about 6.

I wish people would think before buying them and setting them off in residential areas. Every place hosts a huge event specifically for Guy Fawkes - why isn't that enough?

I dread the day the dogs find a firework that hasn't exploded properly.

i agree, i find rockets and burnt out things in my garden after bonfire night, the neighbours let loads off but theres a big display in the town. i have to go out and check everythings ok first thing in the morning. one hit the patio doors last year, god knows what could have happened if i had it open at that point!

Oh that makes my blood run cold....

They just don't think, these people. I can think of a million better things to spend my money on that won't involve annoying people trying to sleep and scaring every animal in the vicinity.

The distance they can go is frightening. That's why I worry about the dogs out on walks. Glad to say we're having lots of lovely rain though - put a great dampener(literally) on any going off last night haha!

Thank goodness it was fairly quiet here last night, only heard a few fireworks go off after 12am. It was still drizzling throughout the night tho. Still many hours of the weekend left, lets keep praying it remains quiet.

It was like a war until 11.50pm last night here. Our home was actually shaking.

Good thing is, in the run up, the dogs have decided enough is enough and have stopped bothering. Cal doesn't even notice which is GREAT, the rabbit has never been phased and the cat was snoring as normal.

It was just me grinding and knashing my teeth trying to sleep! :D haha

i woke up this morning to find ren the canary dead in the bottom of the cage. she was very timid and scared of most things, i think the fireworks were too much for her little heart to take. i feel awful, like i should have done something more.
