first off I ran a search, nothing really stood out in previous threads.

I put on some chapstick and I got all the love and bird kisses anyone could ever ask for, but it was all to taste the cherry chapstick and rub it all over his beak.

I basically assume it's safe, maybe not the healthiest thing, but neutral safe. Is there anything anyone knows about it that's going to make me be like "OMG We need to go to the vet!!!!" Or is this something normal and routine....moderation ok, never do it again, naw it's harmless, no it's good for them.....

Just with the texture I would go with "never do it again" but not quite "rush to the vet right this second"

You would need to look in depth at the ingredients of Chapstick. Even if perfectly harmless it is not something they need so make sure you only apply after a cuddle fest thus cutting his opportunity down of getting any of it. Wonder if the smell appealed?

thanks for the quick replies, I'm sure the smell and the taste appealed. at first I was like wow then when he was rubbing the top of his beak on it I was like ...uhm is this the bird version of catnip? It's just mostly white petroleum jelly, safe even for human babies, I'm sure I could eat the entire tube and have no ill effects but I'm not a bird.

Not 100% but don't think it is put anywhere on humans where it is consumed, even on lips it is in small quantities.

Would Coconut oil work on those luscious lips?

Many dangerous ingredients!
Chapstick is loaded with questionable ingredients. Here’s what’s in Chapstick Lip Balm in Classic Cherry flavor:

Ingredients:
Arachidyl propionate, camphor, carnauba wax, cetyl alcohol, fragrance, isopropyl lanolate, isopropyl myristate, lanolin, light mineral oil, menthol, methylparaben, octyldodecanol, paraffin, phenyl trimethicone, propylparaben, red 6 lake, saccharin, white wax.

awwwww I eat those for breakfast.....no, I'm kidding, thanks..I will disallow in the future.

camphore and carnuba wax I wouldn't worry about, but yeah there's a lot of other extras I don't know about.

I have never been a big fan of Chapstick as it for whatever reason develops into a habit with Humans.

A tiny bit on a Parrot by accident, not worth a run to the CAV. Biggest problem is its base, petrochemical. The goal is to keep any petrochemical (semi to full liquid) base product away from Parrots.

Natural oils like (staying with the topic here ) Coconut oil is much safer for our Parrots and for us Humans!

To keep your lips luscious in a 100% bird safe and natural way, drink more water! Hydration is actually the key to avoiding chapped or dry lips.

I actually have chronically dry and cracked lips, and I stay far away from Chapstick, often times it can make things worse. The best thing I've found has been Lanolin HPA, which is hypoallergenic and highly purified with nothing else added. But I mostly use this at night because it's pretty heavy, it does make a big difference.

I really don't have a dry lips problem I just felt a "split" starting to maybe form after working all night. It's fine now. I was more concerned for the bird.
