dna testing??

just wondering how you go about dna testing your birds. i read that you pull a tail feather out, but that seems it would hurt? is there any other way?

Our breeder clips the baby birds nails and gets a little blood that way. Personally, I would think this is easier and less painful than pulling a feather out. As long as you don't clip toooo short, you can stop the bleeding with clotting powders or even regular flour. Hope this helps.

yes it has thankyou, have foun d new avian vet so will take them there. i didn't want to cause any pain for them, and then for them to assossiate that pain with me! x

I would do exactly the same, being in your position. Rather let the vet do the dna, than have the bird be afraid of your, and begin not to trust you. That would be a big setback, and take ages to get back where you were with the bird.

Hi Melly, it's actually 3-4 feathers plucked from the chest, and not tail feathers, that probably would hurt :11:, I prefer a blood sample myself, as Di has mentioned by clipping a toenail just a tad bit short, if you take it slow and easy it's not really that difficult and not painful, I do my own birds and have helped a couple of members here on the forum do their birds, if you were here in the US I could send you a test kit and you could do your own, however sending samples from outside the country to the US is prohibited, the good news is the company I use, Animal Genetics/Avian Biotech Int., has a testing facility in the UK, I'll post a link to their website and you can read up on it, if you have any questions you can either call them directly or I can do my best to answer your questions here.

We took pheonix to thr vet and he just pulled one feather from each wing
they didn't even bleed and pheonix gave no reaction
he made sure to pinch the surrounding area to restrict blood Flow and that was that over and done in 5 mins
