From the moment I got my Mochi, my green cheek conure, he's always been pretty quiet. I know that green cheeks are considered the lowest noise-level conures, but even then he has been a very silent speaker.
Of course half of the time he's usually quacking, or what I like to call a little "wenk," which is what it sounds like to me when he just sort of makes a little grumble. Anything louder than a 3/10 volume level is actually unusual of him. The past two days, he learned how to make the kissing sounds I'm always doing at him, but those were the acceptable sounds. After tonight,
I've realized that Mochi will let out a couple famous conure screeches if and only if I'm singing, and I don't know what this is about. I am a good singer and he should not be complaining! LOL I can't tell if it's because he likes it, hates it, or if he's just happening to squawk at the same time I'm singing by coincidence. I might even just be getting him excited by making noise and he just wants to join the party by letting out the unholy sound that is his squawking. It's easy to catch, and he only does it for a couple seconds, so all I have to do is stop singing immediately and either leave the room for cover the cage for a few minutes so that he knows that squawking is not a desirable behavior.
To be honest, the squawks aren't bad, my cockatiel could do (and did do)
much worse, and he does it so infrequently that it doesn't bother me at all,
but I live with my family and I wouldn't want to bother anybody.
Should I continue to treat this occasional squawking like I would a normal screaming bird by leaving the room, or should I just stop singing to him?
I refuse to punish Mochi in anyway unless it's passive akin to leaving the room or draping the cage for a few minutes. I don't think I can "reward"
silence because he probably won't realize when he's being quiet, but I'll take any advice about it, or any comparison if anyone has a bird that behaves similarly.
