Hey guys,

so this evening my 2 year old lovebird succumbed to the injuries she's had under her wing for about a year now. Several visits to the vet that resulted in no improvement. It is really a long story and I did everything in my power to help her heal, but today (even with a collar on) she somehow managed to open her wound wide, wide open, the bleeding was plentiful and even though I managed to stop it she passed away. When I took her afterward I saw that the ligaments were visible and I have no idea how it happened as we were at the vet's yesterday and it looked okay.

Her brother Max is now all alone. He's been with her his whole life and is now desperately calling out and looking for her.

I need tips on PROPER ways to bring a new bird home and introducing them to one another. I'd like to get a new companion for him as soon as possible, as this was a very sad outcome. I am looking into buying from a breeder, approximately a bird his own age.

Any tips are welcome,
thanks guys...

So sorry for your loss. Be sure to get an additional cage if you get another bird, so they can be properly introduced in side-by-side cages first. That way everyone stays safe and they can hear, see, and sing to each other without causing injury. Going through a breeder would be your best bet to get a healthy bird that also may come to you tame.

Best of luck to you and your lovebirds!

Good advice above... you might use the excellent SEARCH tab above for some more reading.
All I'll add is... BLESS you for caring.
And sharing.

So sorry to hear this. The loss of a feathered youngin is awful. Similar situation here. Cookie is mourning his adopted baby Booger "missing" from our home. Offer what comfort you can and realize there is no way to tell if bringing in another bird will make matters better. Its a dice roll IMHO.. Best wishes whatever u decide

Thanks everyone! I have a friend who is a registered bird breeder so he said he'll help me find a reliable person.

I have an additional cage and their big cage can be split into two so that they can properly adjust when we bring a new bird.

I'm so very sorry for your loss:( We went through this a couple of years ago with losing a Lovie, and added a female of about the same age in a divided cage. It was not very long at all before they were feeding each other through the bars, and have been happily paired up ever since. Just a few weeks ago, we lost an older Lovie, Lemon, whose mate is also old. With him, we decided to not try to add another one as Zoe is so old that we knew we would be setting up the new bird for a loss. He is surprisingly doing well without a mate, we added new toys and moved his cage around a bit.
It is so hard to watch them grieve:(

Thanks everyone for your support! Pika has been buried at our vacationhouse today, under a big pine and I know she's better now and free of her ilness and injury!

I contacted a registered breeder and yesterday evening we brought home two wonderful new lovebirds (one is a 7 month old female, and the other is 3 months old and presumed to be a female but the breeder is unsure as she's yet so young). So far things are going great, they are in the same big cage just divided in the middle, and will be divided for several days until I see how the two of them are behaving towards Max. So far all three of them are getting along, the females found food and water, and I hope this will work out.

Thanks again to all of you
