Screen Door suggestions?

I've gotten a bit concerned about this summer. What kind of screen do you have to ensure that your fids dont escape when the door is open?

I live in an apt with a regular door out to the balcony. I have one of those hanging screen doors with the slit down the middle that closes with magnets. I worry that if Fidget were to flutter down from his tree towards it, he might hit it and open it and wander out to the balcony and disappear. (Hes clipped)

I'm looking for ideas on what ways you use to keep your fid safe from escaping out a door that you want to keep open during warm weather?

We used the same on the boat for years. The only difference was that we purchased 'two' and modified one with twice the number of magnets. At that time we had a YWA that was a weak flier, but a strong glider /walker. In the end, we stitched the first two inches at the bottom together. Honestly, it was a bit of a pain, but he never walked-out. Redid it, placing it on the outside, which gave us a bit more height and that made it a tiny bit easy to walk though, one person at a time. Fundamentally, one person was outside and one inside, and passed stuff in and out!

The difference between the magnet and a Anderson solid frame single insert (glass or screen) door comes down to how often someone is in and out. If rare, the Anderson solid frame would be my choice. Understand, that the magnet screen needs to be replaced yearly or more often. It was not uncommon for us to replace it twice a Summer.

Understand that our Amazon was surface trained and viewed the opening as a solid surface that one of his Staff would open when he went in and out in his travel cage.

With solid screen doors, we do not use auto-closers! It quickly changes your vantage point! You 'always' are checking the screen door, you never assume that its closed. And, that is a good thing. Visitors, quickly pick-up on it and also are double checking.

Thank you for the suggestions Sailboat! I may pick up a second one and take your suggestions. I actually go in and out a lot in the summertime, so the magnet one it is!

Can you explain what 'surface' training is and how to do it? It seems like it might be a good idea!

thanks
