So this morning I took my 3 birds downstairs to their outdoor cage before I left for university at about 7am. My mom hadn't told me that there would be painters coming in to paint a small part of the ceiling in our lounge, which I have to carry the carrier cage through when bringing them back to my room. I just got home and of course I would like to fetch the birds and bring them back upstairs to be with me and have some time out of the cage. I also have to bring them upstairs at some point today because they sleep upstairs.

Do you think that briefly moving through the room with fresh paint with them is too dangerous? I would just be carrying the cage through the lounge to get to a different room unaffected by the paint. I'm really worried about it, but I know staying in their cage downstairs is not something that they are used to and not something that I want for them, they might get stressed or upset. Will covering the cage with a towel or something at least partially prevent the fumes from affecting them? I really don't know what to do in this situation, any advice would be appreciated.

I'd give it as long as you can before moving them, but I don't think passing through a recently painted room quickly will be a problem unless a very strong smelling paint has been used (which water based typically aren't). I'm not sure about in South Africa, but here in the US most water based interior paints now are low VOC, have virtually no odor and are dry within a few hours.

Yes it is water-based and doesn’t have much of an odor! I think it should be okay. I’ll just move them as quickly as possible haha.

taking a cursory glance through the beast that is Google, water based paints seem to be fairly okay around Parrots. I think as long as you're just passing through the room there shouldn't be any worries then you can just let the room air out a bit and allow the paint to dry

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
If you can verify the paint is indeed water based and low VOC, a quick trip through the room should prove harmless.

I repainted most of my house interior about 2 years ago with such paints. My birds were moved to the garage and a dedicated bird room that was not painted. The odors quickly dissipated, no harm done.

Thanks everyone! Yes it is definitely water-based and low VOC, my mom was like “we have birds I would never use highly toxic paint” haha! I was probably all stressed for nothing but I’m just a paranoid parront [emoji28]
