Lacie the Cockatiel
Hello,

I currently have two budgies that aren't tame and are settling in as I got them a couple weeks ago. They're still pretty nervous and afraid but have improved significantly from the first week they are here.

This week I'm going to be getting a tame female cockatiel who would be spending a lot of time out of her cage. I tried to look it up and could not find any information regarding this scenario. The two budgies and cockatiel would be living in the same room in different cages. I'm afraid that the budgies will be too afraid of the cockatiel and because stressed. I'm aware that the budgies and cockatiel should avoid physical contact, but is there anything else I need to know? What are the ups and downs of this?

Thanks!

Having them in the same room should be fine and may even help the Budgie’s settle :) be sure to quarantine first.

Hi there!

Firstly, if you would like some tips on taming your two budgies, check out my sticky post:

Taming and bonding with budgerigars

I would recommend not letting them out of their cages until their are tame enough so that you do not have to chase them and stress them out and hinder the bonding process to get them back in.

I have two budgies and a cockatiel. All three are tame. Initially I set them up in separate cages, but they interacted so so well out of the cage that I eventually decided to combine the two cages (it was a double story cage that could be converted into one even larger cage) because Berry (my cockatiel) often seemed lonely and inactive within her separate cage. However, this is just my experience and many others have had to house them separately.

Cockatiels and budgies actually interact in the wild, and thus many people have had success with them coexisting, especially when they interact out of their cages. I am sure that there are exceptions to this, but as long as you watch them with strict supervision you can notice and prevent any aggression in the unfortunate event that your birds don't get along.

I was very worried about introducing my cockatiel to my budgies after her quarantine period (you should always quarantine new birds before introducing them to your flock) , but since she is so amiable, she never reacted harshly when they annoyed her. She is naturally a very gentle bird, so when the budgies (who have very big, obnoxious personalities) try to bother her, she never reacts with more than a hiss. This is just my experience though, and may not be shared by other people.

So, I think you should:
a) quarantine your cockatiel before introducing him/her to your budgies
b) bond with your budgies before allowing them out of the cage
c) watch your birds with strict supervision when they are introduced out of the cage
d) If any aggression ensues, make sure to separate them and prevent any aggression to avoid injury

I hope this helps!

I am planning to tame a female cockatiel. For it to remain tamed, I don't want to get her a cockatiel partner, rather a male budgie as they are known to be less aggressive than the females.
I'm gonna get the cockatiel from a breeder and hand-feed her until she weans (I've done hand-feeding before). Should I get the budgie as a baby of same age? Or should I get an adult budgie after when the cockatiel is weaned and fully tamed?
