Cockatiel Eggs

Hi again fellow parrot lovers. I recently purchased a "proven pair" of cockatiels, turns out he isnt that close to her. They still stay in the same cage, but my question is she just recently layed 2 eggs im about 60% sure they are not fertile they are on the bottom of the cage (not in a nest) and she is very protective over them can she hatch these eggs if they are fertile and how long does it take? If they arent fertile how long should i wait b4 getting rid of them. greatful for responses

I used to have a cockatiel that layed eggs and they were all infertile because she was my only bird at the time. She would be very protective of them and sat on them for about a month and then eventually gave up on them. If you take them out any sooner her instincts will tell her to lay more. Don't be alarmed if her poop is foul smelling for a little while, apparently that it normal after they lay eggs. Is this your first time breeding? Just be careful and watch for signs of her becoming egg bound. My 'tiel died at only 4 years old for that reason

and I hear it is very common for cockatiels.

I would move the eggs to the nestbox incase they are fertile. Let her sit them for 28-30 days. If they do not hatch then remove them. If you do not want them to breed afterwards remove the nestbox.

Well the thing is, there is no nesting box. This is the first time i have had little eggs and Im so excited but Im afraid they arent fertile everyone cross your fingers that they are. Bless her heart shes giving it her all. If they are fertile and they hatch she will be a wonderful mother. Thanks so much for the replies. Hope everyone has very Merry Christmas

Provide her with a showbox that is lined with paper towels. If they are fertile she is going to need something to help keep the babies warm and safe.

ok if there is a male in a cage they dont have to be bonded to raise a clutch so first move the eggs into the nestbox feed her some foods with calcium such as boiled egg whtes
