Lovebird (Coco)
Parakeet (Riley)
Hey yā€™all!
Before I get into it, I wanted to let you know Coco and Riley live in separate cages and only interact during playtime. I also feed them a lot of treats together when they are out, and yes, I also do give them their individual play time and love.
I honestly Canā€™t find anything about Lovebirds and parakeets being together, I was wondering if you guys could give me hints as to watching and looking out for any aggressive or domestic behavior? I always watch them when they play together, so it would be nice if I could stop a fight before it breaks out. So far, my Lovebird Coco (I assume sheā€™s a girl by her behavior, but honestly not too sure) and my male parakeet Riley get along fine from what I see. Riley will Preen her, but will never let her preen him. I donā€™t know if thatā€™s because of course her beak is bigger than his, or maybe he senses something else. Iā€™m also concerned about how Coco behaves around Riley; Coco will follow Riley around everywhere, but if theyā€™re both sitting on the playground perchā€™s I have, Coco tends to shove him off. Sheā€™ll move as close as she can to him and each time heā€™ll jump off and fly away, but then get back on and the whole process will start again. Iā€™ve caught Riley nipping at her feet when she is sitting higher than he is, but it never seems to bother her which I feel itā€™s more playful, but on the other hand Iā€™ve seen Coco with her head down while moving down the perch towards Riley, almost as if she is aiming for his feet, and soon as she reaches him he will run away.
Another note I might add is they were both on my bed one day, and Coco charged at Riley and looked as if she was trying to mount him, beaked him on his back, he screamed and flew away. Iā€™m not too sure if this is a sign saying theyā€™re annoyed with each other, or if Coco is trying to assert dominance over him? They were actually just out today and Riley was regurgitating seeds for her and she took them. That a sign of bonding oooorrrrr is that because Riley is trying to mate with her (lol)? Or they just trying to coexist together? Iā€™m not too sure, I just want to make sure Iā€™m not missing any signs that are causing stress to one another. I also wouldnā€™t think any of their actions is jealousy, I assume both of them havenā€™t bonded to me yet because of the little time Iā€™ve had them (Which is about 1-3 months). :rainbow1::green1: any input helps!

Iā€™m interested in what others have to say on this topic. I am about to get a budgie and may get a love bird in the future.

Sounds to me that they are getting along well. This may be a good discussion for the behavioral forum. Behavior and animal interactions always fascinates me.

Honestly to me it sounds like they are getting along fine outside of their cages. As far as the occasional foot nibble or squabble, even mated pairs squabble. Just like married people or best friends sometimes argue. No relationship, human or avian, is perfect.

As long as they are short little squabbles, and not actual fighting, they should be just fine. Just make sure that you don't get complacent and always supervise them when together. Relationship status can change in an instant and the lovie's much larger beak is a serious danger to your budgie if they decide they aren't friends anymore.
