My parrot's favorite wide perch is cracking. I've had him for 4 weeks and should have checked it but he came with his cage. I noticed it move when he climbed back on it this evening. Upon inspection its really bad.

I took it out and replaced it with one not quite as thick till I could replace it, but Mr. Sunshine does not feel safe on it and is sitting with his one foot on his perch and he other on the cage side. There are other perches in his cage (as thick as this one) but this is his fav and his sleeping perch.

He has a bad foot and I am worried about his comfort tonight. Not sure what to do. Should I put the old one back in overnight?

Whew! He has found a more comfortable position to perch so my worry has been alleviated for now. I will be off to get a few new perches tomorrow.

I did get him a wide flat perch but he won't go near it, lol. I just keep moving it around every few days hoping he will give it try.

WARNING! This story is heart wrenching:

Mr. Sunshine started life in a doctor's office. He would entertain patients and staff for five days, and then was alone Friday evenings till Monday morning.

He was there for 7 years till one Monday morning staff arrived to find Sunshine had chewed his foot off to free himself from a toy!

He had at least 3 other homes till I had the opportunity and privilege of adopting him 4 weeks ago.

Take a look at the Amazon Forum and find the Thread at the top of the page Titled: I Love Amazons - ... With in this huge Thread is a segment that speaks to "Getting to the Foot of the Problem." That segment talks about selecting the correct size perch for your Amazon (Parrot).

NOTE: Introducing new things to a Parrot can go from no big deal to acting like whatever it is - it must be Radioactive!!! With the latter group, new things should show-up at a distance from them and over a few days or months work their way to and then into your Parrots cage. The rate is fully dependent on your Parrots reaction to the new thing!

- Soft perches are another possibility as the surface area in which your Parrot rests upon is much smaller than normal and pad damage can occur quicker. This group includes rope perches, Vet Rap placed on a standard perch or custom flat perches with a hand towel rapped around it. Color and pattern based on the what your Parrot approves.

DYI'ers with shop tools can create custom flat perches from standard wood flooring pieces that are cut to fit the needs of your Parrot. In this application, the edges are cut at a 45 degree to create a nail catch and the flat surface between sized to the balancing needs of your Parrot. This custom flat perch can be covered with Vet Rap or a cloth towel.
