Iā€™ve got a 4 year old Quaker who has a sprained wing. Will he be able to fly again? What about his personality? And how can we help him heal faster? He currently refuses to drink water and his food intake is cut by half...

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
So sorry to hear your Quaker has a wing problem. Are you certain it is not broken? Reduced appetite may be a sign of pain. Is it possible to see an avian vet for verification and possible treatment?

If this is indeed a muscle sprain, it will take some time to heal, no good way to rush recuperation. Reduced activity will help the process.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Do you know what happened?

I would keep him as calm as possible and place him in a small carrier to keep him still until you can take him to see his vet. I personally wouldn't try to splint his wing, b/c just by trying could aggravate the situation and possibly make the injury worse. IMHO
(My Levi would freak out if I tried to splint a wing)
I hope it isn't broken and he just needs some time to recover. Please keep us posted.

Ohh... This doesn't sound good. Poor baby!!!! This sounds like a broken wing and needs a visit to an avian vet right away. Any decrease in water and food is a big deal, and birds don't give much warning then they are critical. I don't want you to loose your bird, or to have the bird suffer. You really are going to need to see the avian vet on this one. Please keep us updated.

I agree with all the above, this isnā€™t a time to let nature take itā€™s course. Please take your Quaker to an avian certified vet as soon as possible.

We have seen an avian vet and did some xrays, according to the vet heā€™s got a sprained wing, didnā€™t see any broken bones. Sherwood can spread his wings out on his own but I can tell itā€™s painful, doctor prescribed an anti inflammatory medicine (.03mg once a day) and Sherwood is talking a little more, his water intake very low however..

So sorry to hear your Quaker is hurt. How long have you had this Quaker and how did it happen? Knowing the background of the situation may get more specific advice and can ensure it doesn't happen again.

Glad to hear you got vet check n pain relief! How do you know water intake is down? I'm just curious, I rarely see my birds drink, unless they are stealing from me!!

You could always add high water content fruit and veggies (such as melons) to ensure extra fluid intake.

Have you tried offering him warm water? My Levi prefers his water warm.
