Hi All, my new baby Gabbana i have had for 6 days today i bought it from a pet store. I have let him out his cage a few times and 2 days ago he crashed during flight. He landed on the mirror frame lost his grip fell down onto the fire place ledge, then took flight again landing a weird way onto the back of the sofa.

I could tell he had hurt because he was unable to take proper flight again and was falling down. Bearing in mind not use to flying being stuck in a cage for how long i don't know.

I had to hold him by towel to get him back into his cage for his own safety.

He is eating etc and happy, however i have not let him out for 2 days and noticed his wing yesterday when he was having his little belly rub from me which he loves in his cage.

It looks like the flight feather is split or is it the flight feather ? and also one of his little green one's is too.

What can i do and what problems will have for my bird now that it's wing is like this. I have took some pics of how his wing looks. Any advice. ?

Full grown feathers like that has as much feeling as your hair does. Breaking a feather doesn't cause physical pain, unless we're talking about a blood feather. If he just broke a feather, he'll still be fine and able to fly if he didn't clipped.

That being said, is he back to normal mobility? If he isn't, you need to see an avian vet to make sure he didn't break or sprain anything. Birds do hide symptoms better than mammals, which can ultimately lead to their downfall.

I'm a bit concerned that he hasn't been out of his cage for 2 days. Are you doing ok? We all have bad days sometimes (I know I do), and I'm thankful Cairo's cage is big enough for him to fly a little inside. Hope you guys can make it through together and go back to spending outside-cage time together.

He is still eating and getting around his cage and whistled to me today in his cage however i don't want to let him out just in case he hurts himself more causing more injury. I did leave the door open yesterday but he never come out.

He was eating while his door was open but i let him be. I thought a few days to recover from what ever he has done is the sensible thing to do. He is eating out my hand so the bond is still thriving between us.

So there being a split across the feather wont cause any problems then ? i thought that was a flight feather one of the important feathers to help with flight and landing ?

Remember, you have a toddler that is trying out his wings in life! As terrifying as it is, you need to give him room to grow and learn!

While he's learning maybe you could let him out in a safer room, one without the fireplace etc.

If you were to look at my Nike's feathers you would wonder how she can fly. She is very rough on them and they always look beat up but believe me, even clipped she has no issues flying.
