Hi all. New member needing help. I inherited my moms 30yr old blue and gold macaw. We are not able to handle her. She has a large feather hanging (flopping around)that is obviously bothering her. I donā€™t think itā€™s a blood feather because it looks mostly white/clear. I canā€™t see the part closest to the wing. What do I do? Will it come out on its own? She is spending most of the time on top of her cage I think because it hurts when she hits it. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Restraining her is probably out of the question. We are very inexperienced. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum.
Just for safety sake, there are many household dangers that can kill a parrot. Non stick pans, bakeware, cookie sheets, irons and ironing boards, space heaters to na.e a few will off gas toxic fumes when heated killing a bird in seconds. Hopefully someone will come Ong with links or more details. Also plug in room fresheners and sprays, cleaning products ECT very dangerous.
I clean my cages with white vinegar in cool weter never add to hot wster or the vinegar will release toxic fumes....
It takes time to earn your birds trust, time and treat bribes.
Not sure what advice to give on the feather.... Keep checking back others will offer great advice.
Thank you for taking in the bird. Rember they greive too, and are sensitive to change.

Hi Jcurls,

Welcome to the PFs, glad you joined us.

When Levi has a bothersome feather, he basically takes care of it himself.

I personally would focus on building trust, so you can eventually handle her.
If you towel her and pull it out, it will only cause her more distrust right now. She needs time and patience to adjust her new environment and people. She is also grieving not being with your mother. A lot going on for her to process.
Laura has already given you some excellent advice.
Here are some links to help as well.
