Sun Conures: Daenerys & Calliope |
PF Lovebirds: Pigwidgeon & Kore
Hi everyone, I'm new here. I currently have two sun conures and two PF lovebirds. Tomorrow I am meeting two G2s (14 year old, 4-5 year old, unknown sexes) and a male Eclectus. I'll be bringing one of them home with me! But I don't know which one. A lot will decide on the meeting itself. What are your opinions? I am prepared for either bird, as I want both in my flock some day, but am unsure which I should get NOW. Please help!

Oh boy....it doesn’t get any more diametrically opposed species. Do you want a stoner, or do you want a spaz?

Also, are you prepared for the eclectus diet? It’s not easy, not cheap, and not optional.

And the Ekkie hormones, oy vey.

It’ll come down to meeting them, and seeing which one chooses you.

I suffer from MBS too. But there does come a point where you can't provide the attention each parrot needs. I struggle as I only have two hands lol and 4 parrots want head scritches at the same time! Only two shoulders and everyone wants to ride on them as I move around the house... Plus not all get along.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
The good news is each can be a wonderful companion. Your challenge will be to determine which personality best suits you and your home.

I hope you've done some research, in any case the determinant might be which one chooses you! I'd encourage you to read the "sticky" (top shaded) threads in the Amazon and Cockatoo forums.

Good luck, let us know your choice!!

Oh my! Not knowing the whole situation and specific motivation, impossible to recommend one vs the other. We all have our preference, but we're not you. If one of them is for sure going home with you, then I would just say, keep an open mind, spend as much time as you can, and let the birds choose. They are unquestionably better at choosing than we are. You'll know.

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
It concerns me a bit that you are bringing home one tomorrow when they require such different things and so much preparation.
Can you wait a bit so as to prepare....?
Cockatoos are a unique challenge behaviorally/socially and eclectus require a highly specialized diet...Do you have experience with either species? The stoner vs spaz comparison above is not wrong---cockatoos are notorious hand-fulls and they require A TON of attention, so if you got one and it didn't get along with the others, would you have enough time to play with/interact with it out of the cage without the other birds? They are super-social and they have to be out a lot...
Another thing to consider is that a large bird like either of these could injure a smaller bird (like the ones you have).
