Hello everyone! At home I have been revamping an old cage that belonged to another bird for my cockatiel so that she can have a bigger home. My Green Cheek Conure, Sage, my Lovebird, Peaches, and my Cockatiel, Florence have all been on the playpen on top before peacefully. All of a sudden Sage has started being mean to Florence, chasing after her with her mouth open until Florence flies away. I honestly don’t know if she would actually bite Florence or if it’s just for show.

Side note: Sage and Peaches are mates, and Sage started being aggressive after visiting with Peaches on the playpen. However, Peaches, Sage, and Florence have all been on the playpen at the same time without issue in the past.

I’m assuming that Sage has claimed the new cage as her own, and wants Florence out of her territory. Sage is actually getting an upgrade as well, its the same model of cage, just a different color. Is there anyway I can stop this behavior and get them to at least tolerate each other again? Should I give this cage to Sage and the next one to Florence, or should I continue with the original housing plans?

I hope this all makes sense, I’m not very good with words. Thank you in advance!

Short of being able to read their minds, it’s difficult to say what might be influencing Sage’s change in the way he’s relating to Florence. You may even be unwittingly showing Florence a little more attention or favour and Sage may be picking up on that and reacting.

I had a green cheek and a cockatiel combination up until about 18 months ago and they tolerated each other but were not friends. They were out of their cages whenever someone was home but would maintain a safe distance most of the time, with my GCC occasionally pulling on my cockatiel’s tail or trying to nip at his toes. They had their own cages but would occasionally swap - mostly the GCC’s idea! Once you’ve got your refurbished cage ready maybe you can let your birds see who is most enthusiastic about it, then when you bring in the other new one they may change their minds again! Meanwhile just keep an extra eye on Sage while these changes are taking place, he may just need a little more attention and reassurance.

Now that I think about it I think that’s what’s going on D:I had actually tried to leave her be and give her time to get used to everything because she’s pretty skittish, but now that she’s more comfortable with me she needs more attention. I’ll definitely give her more attention now, thank you so much!
