Hello my fellow forum friends, I am hoping this thread may reach someone who can help me out. I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and am desperately seeking someone who is "experienced" with wing clipping. I have a Quaker and a TAG, what I am looking for is someone to come to my home to do it so that I don't have to travel with my fids. I wish I could do it myself but it just freaks me out....and if I am freaked so will my babies. My sister used to clip Poncho for me(quaker) but is moving 14hrs away and as for Bailey (tag) he is still new to us and although he has been clipped in the past(so I've been told) I am not sure what his reaction would be...blah blah blah... Can anyone help :)

If you have a avian vet, they can do it there! It really isn't that complicated to do. I don't like it too much depends on the bird. I've owned 100 something birds before when I used to raise them. A few would chew down to the point of no return and it would never grow back out. Have you looked into a harness?

Oh yes of course the Vet can do it, but she is an hour away and she is the only avian vet in or around Ottawa...which means the price is ridiculous! As my babies don't go outside unless in there outdoor cage, and a harness would be a little overkill in the house. With Poncho it's not a big deal that he isn't clipped being little he can navigate the house without flying into walls, Bailey on the other hand seems to be a little clumsy and I am frightend that she will hurt herself. Both birds are really non-flyers, much perfer just to walk around, Bailey only took flight a couple of times when she was startled. If I can find someone than great, if not they will just stay flighted.

My macaw gets shy going outside, he tuck his head under my neck to hide. I dunno why he does that. He bit me the first time going outside, now he tucks his head.. . We've owned him for 7 years and he flew only 3 times, all towards me. He never tries to leave me.

I used to hate the idea of wing clipping. But after my Mitrid Conure & a Cockatiel flew out the door on seperate occassions never to be seen again, I felt it was not really responsible on my part as a pet owner. Birds raised as pets lose their ability to survive in the wild on thier own especially in areas that they are totally unfamiliar with. Harnesses are great for walking out doors with your birds, but don't help much if the bird is flying loose in your house and someone is sweeping the floor and happens to open the door at the wrong time or too wide. Then out flies the bird.

My Senegal came to me with clipped wings and will have his wings clipped again by an avian vet who is local and only charges $8.00 to clip them. He's starting to get a faily good glide rate going like 20 or so feet, so it won't be long now. I clipped a Cockatiels wings a few times years ago before I realized how dangerous it was. If you cut the wrong feather or two short the bird could bleed to death. So for me it's a cheap investment.

That's the reason you need to make sure you do not cut the blood feather! I do not have the birds out when someone needs to go out. We have a policy the door does NOT open during the time birds are out and about. I put a door up in my living room so they can't escape out the front door if someone walks in. Im very prepared! Im all in for clipping so they don't get loose out and about. But im more pro-harness!!! Even with my macaw, I clipped him and he chewed on the clipped feathers so short they would never grow back out. It happened to me too many times. Most of them wont but just that small percentage was enough to discourage me! Im highly against leg bands too. LoL. The stuffs I've been through if you only knew...lol
