Barrabad Parrot
Hi everyone,

I'm a completely new owner (had my barraband parrot :greenyellow: for about a month now) so I have no experience whatsoever. I did my research and I think I'm doing pretty well, she is able to take food from my hand and lets me pet her, but occasionally she isn't in the mood and runs from me. I know I need patience, but I read about people bonding with their parrot in a month, and it's been a month for me. She flew next to me a few times (she's out of her cage most of the time) and it's always very exciting, since she doesn't let me touch her when she's out. I'm probably being impatient, there is definitely progress; but it's very slow.

I was wondering how I can teach her to step up? She only eats from my hand if I bring it close to her and there's nothing she likes too much that she would be willing to eat whenever it's near. Do I need to wait a bit more before teaching her? Any information that's not typically mentioned in guides or online (like personal experiences) would be incredibly helpful. Sorry for the long post!

Have you tried giving her fruits? My Zazu isnā€™t crazy about nuts and seeds, but will do anything for a pear :D
Iā€™m starting to train him now and I use clicker and a treat (pear in my case). Considering his young age, heā€™s doing pretty well with the step ups and flying to me (when in the mood).
Try researching on clicker training, hope it helps.
And donā€™t lose hope, it might take some time to bond, my cockatiel Walad is with me for 6 months now and only recently weā€™ve had a major breakthrough

I have! But she sees them the same as seeds, nothing too special. I noticed she loves to nibble on corn though

I had my Quaker for about 3 week's now and he is already stepping up. I first got him used to a stick and then moved my hand closer every time he stepped up until he put his feet on my finger. Once he is comfortable with being on your fingers try removing the stick and having him step up on just your fingers.

That's a good idea, I'll try that. Thank you!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome and congratulations to parronthood!

You are quite correct, the bonding period lasts at least one month. You are clearly making much progress, this thread offers additional tips. Building trust and bonding is key to a long and beloved relationship: http://www.parrotforums.com/general-parrot-information/49144-tips-bonding-building-trust.html

Stepping up is a natural behavior, rewarding with a treat is highly effective. Small bits of walnut or almond are cherished by many parrots.

Never too early to introduce new and healthy foods! (not making assumptions of what you feed, just sharing what may be helpful!) http://www.parrotforums.com/parrot-...7-converting-parrots-healthier-diet-tips.html

Thank you! This one is after I came back after a few days (she was with my family) and she fell asleep next to my cheek https://ibb.co/wRFZqQt

And here's a video of her flying to my hand!

The Superb parrot is sexually dimorphic, with the males showing the flashy multi-colors and the females being more or less all green. She is far too large to be a beebee ( Brotogeris) parrot.
