Flat screen TV.... how do you keep your birb off?

My wife and I have a nice flat screen that is not mounted to a wall. It is free standing on a table. It is sturdy and strapped, so it can not tip over.



But as of recent Perci our sun conure has taken up flying around the house. He has 4 perches.... and the TV is his favorite which is NOT one of his perches. It isn't even the tallest perch! His big perch is 6.5" tall.



So my question.... how have you managed to keep your birds off of your TV? Or other unwanted landing spots.



My wife and I have been thinking those plastic spiky bird strips like you see on the roof of stores. Effective I am sure, but also ugly.

Well my birds have shown No interest in landing on my freestanding flat tv BUT I would certainly advise AGAINST this idea. Strongly Against. I am sure there is an easy, much better solution, that does Not involve Adding a Bird-Danger to your home.

I suspect that just placing a more-desirable perch near & slightly above the tv-aka-perch will probably be all that's needed. (However if another, even better solution-idea comes to me later, I will add another post. )

But, please do not apply Spiky Bird-Deterrent Strips anywhere inside your home that you share with your bird!

By providing them their own “ furniture “ hang out spots

I use ceiling hooks and fishing line to hang rope hoops or the large rope bungee , I have them over my breakfast bar, with a plastic try and need paper on the counter fir any mess. I hang them over the cage top to increase the play are and useable vertical sos e above the cage, and I have one by my sliding door. I also have that metal stand that’s five feet high sold st pet supermarket that you attach a swing , I use a big spiral rope bungee to it, then I cane move tat around to differ t spots so they can hang out.

It’s wonderful, they have their spaces, so they aren’t in my furniture, it tv or book shelves or counters. They know and fly to their different spots, done have chew stuff, some have snacks...

My husband puts some blue painter's tape on things the birds won't stop landing on. It sometimes works. Another thing that seems to work is to drape towels.
Finally, an alternative to those scary/dangerous looking spiky things is some kind of garland along the top of the TV:

Something bushy/grassy enough to make it impractical/undesirable for them to land on.

Double sided sticky tape? Bet he wouldn't like that much after a few landings.

he probably likes it because if the fact that you guys look at it, it makes sounds, and has some interesting temperature variations lol

Change the texture..see if you can provide a perch in a similar area that is around the same height etc.

I saved some of the Styrofoam packaging that came with the TV.
I have the Styrofoam on top of the tv but not blocking the screen.
Have had no attempted landings since I put it on there.

If you use this method make sure you are not blocking any of the heat vents at the top of the tv.

Flat screen TV's are not a good choice for a Parrot Perch because of the ever developing heat with some areas exceeding a comfortable level for a Parrot.

As noted above, it provides an upfront viewing point of the Humans and central to the activity.

Create a hooping effect across the top of the flat screen that will keep your Parrot from landing on it. Note: The hoops need to be like 3" (75 mm) high and the same between them. Do Not Leave the Tape on the TV more than a few days as the heat will dry the tape in place. Replace regularly...

Dangerous humor good friend, dangerous humor...

So while I am here at work, my wife has been experimenting.


First she did the sticky tape. We have some double sided gift wrap tape. This was a fail, he didn't mind it.



She tried the towel. He attempted a landing, the towel fell off with him on it. Which startled him and he flew off into a circle and back onto the now towelless TV. For only being 9 weeks... this guy is smart.


Then she got an idea. She took a bunch of zip ties and zipped them up into 1" loops. She then taped them to the top of the TV. When he tries to land on them they are unstable and want to flop around. He then flies back to one of his perches.



Wife has called this a victory. LOL

They can also off-gas and you really don't want your bird sitting right over the plastic-scented vents. If you sniff them, you can generally smell something other than air. It depends on a lot of things, but they are fairly common producers of VOCs in a home.

You are 100% right 'Boats. OP, this was meant as a joke, and sticky tape is definitely not something to try. My SoH gets the better of me sometimes. I apologize.

My Kiwi LOVES to land on the tv, on the laptop, on the monitor.
He also LOVES to be under the tv, behind the tv, on top of the laptop keyboard.

The only way I have managed to keep him off, is by putting up objects he hates.

So, on top of my tv, are a couple pieces of yellow childs play mat. It stays on top of the tv 24/7. Its good though because the connecting grid pieces work perfectly to secure it.
Under the tv, I usually place his most hated or feared blanket. For some reason he cant stand a realistic looking pizza blanket that we own, so naturally I use that.

I dont always have to use the pizza blanket. Mostly, I only pull it out (after a couple verbal warnings) and when I know he is just being cranky and trying to erk me, and wants to stake his ground.

When straight out of the cage, he decides to land under the tv, I know right away what kind of sour mood he is in.

Problem now, is that my dove has realized that Kiwi gets more attention by landing on the tv, so he has started but he's not just not afraid of anything. Lol

Our DYH Amazon is a solid 500 grams and landing on objects that will move when landed on will assure he will avoid it next time. Nothing like an attempted landing on laptop screen to verify its unsuitability of supporting an Amazon and the follow-up crash into one's chest.

Love the interlocking foam pieces across the top of the flat screen!

Iv gone the reverse route since they wouldn't stop landing up there and just figure out how to protect the TV. Started using construction paper down the back side with a Lil fold about a foot down for a poop catcher, just double side tape it to the top and drape down the back and fold up to catch droppings.
