With all the fires ongoing in California the smoke is getting thick in my neck of the woods.

I am keeping windows closed but I can still smell the smoke creeping in.
Should I keep my birds in there cages and not let them fly in the house?

If you think there is a chance the fires could spread to you, I would keep them caged. You want them in their cages to get them transported out of the house as quick as possible if an emergency comes.

My wory is that the smoke I smell inside the house could hurt my birds.
If they are flying around they would be breathing harder/ exchanging more air and causing more damage to there respiratory system.

This is true! With the smoke in the house, use of flight and exertion could end up being harmful to their lungs. Do you have an air purifier?

I do but it’s only good for one room not the whole house.
Still it’s better than nothing. I can’t move the birds into one room.

get and change your AC filter to the expensive ones that filter particles smaller than smoke like 1900 level ones
It will help improve air quality
I've heard you xsn set ac to recirculating home sur and not taking in as much outside air, if that's possible it will help.
All thast thick smoke is terrible ugh por things

Air filter seams to be helping. Only on about 25 min. And even I feel better.
I was sneezing my fool head off until now.
I’ll give it another half hour till I let them fly.
Still I think I will keep it to a minimum for safety.

Filter on a/c is a good one but don’t know the particulars. Got 2 brand new ones I left in the car.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
A definite concern, Wes. Micro particles can lodge deep within our lungs, and I presume, same for avians. I definitely "feel" the heaviness while breathing and am exercising less strenuously until this nightmare is over. Stay safe!!

This is a Truly A Great Recommendation!!!

With the frequency of South California and the West Coast in general wild fires consider upgrading your full house A/C or HVAC system to the large 4" thick filters and then select (as noted above) the filters that pull out to 1900 level. For now, check the thickness of your units filter and buy the highest particle removing filter, you can get. The common thin ones will need to be changed more often, but the improvement in air quality is unbelievable.

NOTE: Check if your auto has a passenger compartment air filter. If your's does and you haven't changed it, please do! If you need to make a run for it, having a reasonable filter for the inside of your auto is a good thing!

Air exchange units: New installations and newer homes commonly have this device and if installed correction they use the home's system filter for incoming air. Some faulty installation exchange air after the filter and if yours is that type, 'shut-it-off!'

Once you have assured that you are using upgraded filters, let the Birds out of their cages. It keeps them more comfortable and less stressed, which makes is much easier to load and go. Keep close taps on the fires, any indications of them coming your way, Leave Early, ahead of the pack! Be prepared, pack now!

As is so normal, Scott Nails This One! There is a reason that Birds went into mines with the miners! Air Sacks are designed for rapid exchange of oxygen into the blood. They are very poor at cleaning themselves and as Scott noted, what is bad for Humans is seriously bad for Birds!
