I have a jenday conure, and usually I can tolerate his screams. Well, today while I was cleaning his cage and taking out his toys (this upsets him!) he let out the LOUDEST, most piercing scream I've ever heard from him directly in my ear. My ear rang for a minute or two and noises sounded muffled! Its been a few more minutes and it feels better and noises are no longer muffled, but it scared me a little! I already have bad sight, I'd like to keep my hearing thank you very much.

He doesn't do this directly in my ear very often, so I never resulted to wearing earbuds, but now I'm curious if a piercing shriek in the ear- even if only once- could damage hearing!

Has this ever been a concern for all you Loud-Bird-Owners out there?

Any parrot screaming into your ear directly can casue some damage. Conures are short an piercing. If you want loud, try macaw screams which are on the order of jet engine loud and can really do serious damage if they are at ear level. Salty is a small amazon and usually his semi-loud stuff isn't too bad, but every once in awhile he lets out this high pitched EEEEEEPPPP that makes our ears flutter it's so loud and he isn't even on my shoulder.

As so well stated by my good friend Wrench, above -- how close is an issue... One of the reasons that Birds on Shoulder is an earned position!

Both Cockatoos and Macaws can cause serious damage to the ear drum just being near by. And here again Wrench nails their level of ear punishing noise. The reality is that their noise levels extend at or above that of 707 with all four engines running at take-off level, which is louder than a 747 with all four of its engines running.

Proper training and precaution on your part will save your hearing...

NOTE: One must know what 'call' your Parrot used for Warming or Danger coming your way or your Parrots way!!!
