Tapa and Tio, Parakeets, Xander 3 month old sun conure
Maybe he is talking to himself so he doesnt feel lonley when you arent there. Therefore when you get into the room, there is no need for him to talk. Does that make sense? lol

Currently -- an orange sided conure (Teddy)
Previously, before moving overseas -- an African Grey (Komo), a peach front conure (Bilbo), and a maroon belly conure (Dino)
Ah yes, I remember it well.
I formerly had an African Grey (Komo). When my mother visited, she documented 22 words or phrases that Komo said, but 95% of the time he would talk only when you were not in the room.
The one exception was when I would start walking up the stairs, and he would almost always say, "Take a nap".
Many birds begin by being closet talkers, hopefully in time they will change.
I guess they are practicing, and when they are more confident, will open up and talk openly in front of people.
Mishka my Ag 3 years old also only spoke in the beginning when no one was around.
I recorded him talking, then when being in the same room as him, spoke the words he was able to say. Within about a month, he began to talk in front of us. Today he talks nonstop, whether we are in the same room or not.

It's same in our house they say select words to us but when were not in the room 2 of them talk like mad to each other

When Ruby talks in a room that we're not in, I think she's practicing. I'll hear her say the same phrase/word over and over again, then when she and I are together, she repeats it "for" me. Her newest one is "Poop, Ruby."

well remington is 13 yrs old and i have been told that he talked all the time with his previous owner, he has been with us now for almost 6 months, maybe he is still getting used to us??

He is probably still getting used to you guys. Mine will not shut up....he turns 10 in may. But Ive had him for 7 years. He started talking from day one when I brought him home. The only time I ignore him completely is when he's in mating mood like he is right now.... he's a bit on the edge and drives me up the walls. Constantly re-gurgitating to feed me or the dogs, scream none stop. Its that time of the year.

I agree. My CAG will practice words by himself, then when he's got them down he'll say them around me.
Here is an example of how Mishka practices. When teaching him a new word or sentence, he repeats and repeats it till he gets it correct.

May be due to being lonly. Mondo will yell "Hey" "Come here" you go into the room he clams up sometimes.

My African is the same, I could sit all day and say Hello,etc. But she doesn't repeat.
She'll just stare at you. She's a great talker but only when she wants too.
