I feel numb. I can’t fathom the past 24 hours.

On Friday morning I walked into the aviary to find Malachite dead. I posted about that yesterday.

My mom received a call in the early hours of Saturday morning from our vet informing her that our poor schnauzer, Shadow, experienced massive internal bleeding and passed, despite all their efforts to save her.

She was admitted on Tuesday after bleeding from a growth in her mouth, which we were concerned was a tumour. Results came back that it was benign, and after lots of tests the vet determined that she was suffering severe anaemia from loss of blood, and seemed confident that a blood transfusion would save her. She had obviously swallowed a lot of blood that we weren’t aware of.

Just yesterday I visited her at the vet, which I have been doing daily. She was so sick, but I really had hope that she would make it. I was the last person in my family to see her alive. Her vet is so experienced, and I really appreciate the lengths he went to to save her.

Earlier this year, her sister Layla passed away too. Layla was 11 at the time of her passing, Shadow was just under 9. She was never the same after her sister was gone, I could tell she was heartbroken.

These were dogs that helped me through some of my darkest times. I loved them both so much. I can’t believe both of them are gone, so suddenly. I knew Layla was sick. She had diabetes, was blind, and started having seizures late in life. I had about a month to mentally prepare myself for saying goodbye to her. I never expected Shadow to leave us so soon too.

Otto, our little miniature pinscher, is all alone now. He’s been sleeping with me or my mom every night since Shadow went to the vet because he hates being alone.

In rememberance of the two of them, here is a picture of my 3 dogs just before Layla passed.

Fly high, sweet angels. I like to imagine that you are now together.

Thank you, everyone. We are giving little Otto lots of love. He is not used to being a lone doggo. He is so social, he used to play with both old girls, and cuddled with them two. We have been taking him to the park to interact with other dogs.

We have found a male min pin puppy who will be joining the family in about 2 weeks. We got really lucky. It is really rare to find purebred min pins in the area that I live, most of the breeders are located in the northern part of the country. Luckily we phoned a breeder who knew of another breeder who had a pair of 4 week old puppies, the female one had been reserved by another breeder, but the male was still available, and hadn't been advertised yet. We thought of adopting, but we really wanted another min pin like Otto, and we couldn't find anything but big dogs in the shelters that were still available.

Hopefully a new friend will bring some joy back into our household after so many losses. Puppies are so full of energy. We want to name him Toto.

Otto and Toto.
