Re: Cage location.

I know I'm not Bill, but Scooter has a day cage and a sleep cage, inherited from her predecessor Boo (BFA).
The day cage is very large, has a playtop, and lots of branches inside for her...

Re: Last night wasn't any fun

It was a whole avocado, left in a bowl to ripen, and it was the thick skinned type (the worst kind, according to poison control). She bit through the skin to get to the meat.

Last night wasn't any fun

Last night I got home from work, looking forward to a regular weekend. Scooter out, exploring the kitchen counter while I got her dinner ready. When I was done, she didn't want to go back to her cage...

Re: communications with beak.

Scooter loves to have her beak rubbed, bangs it against whatever will make noise when she's happy, and rubs it herself when she's in her cage.

Re: Foraging Toys

I keep getting blown away by how completely fearless this bird is. I just took her upstairs with me, while I do my laundry. Boo used to do that, but he kept a distance between him and all the...

Re: Foraging Toys

She's an investigator, definitely. She's gotten comfortable enough with the house and the dogs and the other bird that now she wants to see everything. Last night she was on her perch stand in the...

Foraging Toys

Scooter has only been here a week, but all the lead-in gave me time to get information and supplies. I consider myself lucky she doesn't have neophobia, because she's willing to check out new things...

Re: Introducing Kira

Scooter has been on a mostly seed/nut diet from her previous owners, so I've got to work on her diet. I got some pellet food for her, and the first day was a disaster - she picked all of them out and...

Re: Asking for advice before I jump

Scooter spent the day trying every perch in the cage, to see which she likes best. Ate all her food. And demanded head scratches, of course. Happy Scooter....

Re: Asking for advice before I jump

I also have a very, very old dove, named Silly Bird. A neighbor saved her from a crow attach and dropped her at my house a long time ago, and none of the bird rescue places I called was interested in...

Re: Asking for advice before I jump

Scooter's personality exploded yesterday. At the rescue she was always so quiet, stand-offish and independent. Since she got here, she's got to be everywhere, digging into everything. And I'm getting...

Re: Asking for advice before I jump

The previous owners actually made it a requirement that her cage stays with her. I'd planned to sell it, because the one I have is bigger, has a playtop, and lets her get higher when she's feeling...

Re: so excited

The standing sideways thing is good.
When I first got Boo, I went and talked to a guy at UCSB who studies parrots in the wild, and he told me parrots are instinctively afraid of being stared at....

Re: Asking for advice before I jump

Scooter was a champ, settling into the travel cage, and enjoying the view out the truck windows. She wasn't thrilled with the new cage at home, or with the dogs, and Silly Bird the dove is only...

Re: Asking for advice before I jump

Well, finally some movement. Today I got an e-mail from the rescue. They've got everything arranged with the previous owners, they're going to be in with her 'things' this weekend, and to say...

Re: Looking for advice regarding my new family member!

A parrot's beak is very sensitive, and they use it as a hand to explore their environment. Beaking is a normal "can I trust this?" thing. Try not to pull away unless she bites.

Re: Asking for advice before I jump

The last couple of weekends she's been asking for head scratches, but couldn't quite get past my hand being that close - not enough trust there, yet. Yesterday was the breakthrough when she finally...

Re: Asking for advice before I jump

Well, Scooter didn't get to come home with me today. The rescue place said the previous owners would have the last word on who Scooter went to, and she wasn't able to get hold of them this week. But...

Re: Cellphones

My Amazon, Boo, didn't discriminate - he hated all phones, equally. He didn't talk much, unless the phone rang and I answered it. Then he'd start having a conversation.
Hello?
Oh, hi! How are you?...

Re: Asking for advice before I jump

WOOHOO!
Today's visit with Scooter went great, with an added bonus: the woman who owns/runs the rescue was there today, remembers me from when I adopted Boo, and I'm clear. Next Saturday I drive...
