Re: Out of cage time yet?

If it were me, I'd be inclined to wing clip him for the moment, just until I got him re-trained. That way he goes back whether he likes it or not.

It's exponentially easier to train a bird that...

Re: Advice to future macaw parront?

You raise a macaw the same way you raise a human toddler. With nurturing guidance, love, and boundary setting.

Bite pressure training is a critical thing. They need to learn to control their...

Re: Parrot proofing list? Other questions

You don't punish. You train. You give them plenty of things they are allowed to chew up. And you direct them away from things they are not allowed to chew up. They have to understand the word...

Re: Severe Macaw as an apartment bird?

I had two macaws, three amazons, three conures, and a CAG in an apartment setting and never got a single noise complaint. IT'S HOW YOU RAISE THEM, AND WHETHER OR NOT THEIR NEEDS ARE MET.

Re: REALLY need your advice

I went through this a few years back with my foster nape. The nape loved us, and really, really loved my flock - especially my red lored.

We took in the nape when a friend of mine, who was...

Re: REALLY need your advice

My guide on this situation is always WHAT IS BEST FOR THE BIRD.

If the bird is plucking because she is hit and miss with meeting his needs, and he is not plucking with you... then that says NO.

Re: NEW MEMBER Morning Crying - Desperate

Cover the cage when you put the bird to bed. Should solve the problem. Uncover in the morning.

Re: Older birds hard to tame?

You are describing a cage bound bird that is not tame, and has never been bite pressure trained.

This bird will not step up because it has never been taught to step up.

This bird will also...

Re: Is a Red Fronted Macaw for me with my job?

I've had a red front for 16-17 years or so now. They are one of the easiest to handle love everyone big macs. As long as SOMEONE is there to feed and water and give attention, it should be fine.

Re: Can cats and macaws coexist?

Not a fan of cats and birds.

Macaws have been known to go after cats.

I have a friend whose bird torments the cat mercilessly... the cat is scared ****less of the bird. The bird considers...

Re: Macaw Question

1. That's how it's done with the redirecting the beak.

2. Bite pressure train them and they don't turn into feathered buzz saws.

3. Scarlet's are beaky birds. they put their beaks on...

Haven't been on in awhile, but THAT is a Scarlett NOT a Ruby.

Not really a wild ride. Scarlett's are beaky birds, but that just means they put their beaks on everything are prone to using them to...

Re: How do you take your bird with you everywhere?

The three I take out and about are super bonded to me, recalled, clipped so that they are semi-flighted (ever since Maggie), and "stay put" trained.

Also, I can hand them to you. You can not...

Re: Macaw Wing twitch

Looks like normal "baby bird" stuff to me.

They aren't especially coordinated, or even "all there" mentally at this age.

They soon will be. Now is the time to socialize and bite pressure...

Re: Mac Attack

These are pair bond birds. In the wild you see them in flocks of 30-40 birds, but they are always paired up 2 by 2.

In captivity they tend to have a favorite person.

YOU are obviously IT.

Bite pressure training also helps considerably... though if they get too amped up that does tend to go out the window.

At the risk of being a smart ass... BABIES MAKE NOISES... LOTS OF THEM... ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARE HUNGRY! Like screaming to be fed kinds of noises....

Pretty hard to miss. In fact,...
