Re: What is your definition of a pet?
Thanks. I would agree killing an animal under such circumstances should be illegal. But I'm still not following how what we call them is relevant.
You say that a pet can be legally killed for no...

Re: What is your definition of a pet?
I've recently seen this too, some animal rights group was advocating for not referring to pets as pets.
I'd like to understand why they had this concern - but I currently cannot understand it at...

Re: I wish they wouldn't do that.
Actually the screaming doesn't bother me (and I have a conure!)
Auggie has learned the one thing that just drives me nuts, though. It's a muffled quiet but incessant "baccaw, baccaw" that sounds...

Re: Best perch for shortening nails?
My vet never clipped Auggie's nails, but used the dremmel "sander" instead. Don't Petsmart groomers still have these as an option for dogs still? If you habituate them to the little noise they...

Re: Book Critique Experience
In my day job, yes.
If this is worth discussing, though, why not discuss it here rather than in PMs? What are you reviewing, and how did you get invited to do the review?

Re: Progress
And in no time she'll be trying to hurt, kill, and eat you.
Ah, the stages of parronting! ;)

Re: How old is your conure?
The way these numbers are calculated are often problematic.
As a bird researcher (songbirds, not parrots), people often ask about lifespans of sparrows - but the lifespan of birds is so different...

Re: "Summertime...
Behind every parrot eating a feast of beautiful fresh fruits ... is a bird owner wondering if they can afford to put peanut butter on their stale bread for this meal ;)

Re: Molting vs. Plucking
Another way of saying it:
feathers on bird + feathers on ground = molting
no feathers on bird + feathers on ground = plucking
no feathers on bird + no feathers on ground = you don't have a parrot...

Re: Bird Safe Air Fresheners
Anything you can smell means there are some sort of chemical or particle in the air. So at one level *anything* that smells good could be harmful as avian respiratory systems are so sensitive.

Re: Stepping up on cue
Human hands are very scary for many parrots. They *watch* us to learn how we work - and they see our hands, particularly our fingers, flail about incessantly as we go about our day. Then we come...

Re: What kind of bird is this
I stand corrected. I think also the lack of the bits of red on the "shoulder" make it look more like a mitred as well.
Still, the movie is well worth watching ;)

Re: What kind of bird is this
Looks like a cherry headed conure.
Check out "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill" for a really moving documentary about some of these guys (and girls).

Re: cage size HELP!!!!!!!!
Is it big? That depends a bit on the type of bird. I'm guess this is cockatiel(s) ??
If that is a finch cage, it's pretty good size. If it's a cockatiel cage that they get to come out of but...

Re: Do I need to teach them how to fly?
Auggie was clipped very young too and was when I got him. I never clipped him and he took to flying once his feathers came in.
He didn't need to be *taught* but it did take him time to get...

Yup, sounds like she chose you.
I don't understand people who talk of bird being "addicting" and wanting more - I've never faced that. I love Auggie, why would I get a different bird then?

Re: Caiques and cheese?
You have a cheese-caique ;)
Auggie *loves* cheese. As soon as he sees it, he'll go right for it and rip it out of my hand (or even my mouth) if I don't offer him some.
Cheese is certainly not...

Re: New Green Cheek Nippy, how do we stop it?
Agreed, give him time. But in that time try to get in some training.
Stick training or 'step-up' is a good place to start. But also any tricks, like targetting, anything that will provide...

Is it just the sound that has you worried?
Do you hear it often when he breathes, or is it a voluntary sound?
