Not sure which breed to get...

Sponsored Links
Hi everyone, I'm not sure where is best to post this but I have just one quick question.

I am looking to get a parrot for the first time ever (I have owned a Canary previously, but otherwise have only ever had non-feathered pets). I don't know what to get breed-wise.

I really, really love the idea/look/disposition of Lovebirds, however I live in a one bedroom apartment and I'm not sure if they would be too loud/annoying for my neighbours to deal with.

I would only be getting one bird and I work from home so we would be together essentially all the time.

Any advice on best type of breed (in terms of how vocal/loud they are) would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Re: Not sure which breed to get...

Welcome!! I am also in a one bedroom apartment, so when I decided I needed a bird I googled “quietest parrot” and learned about the small but mighty parrotlet. I’m not going to tell you she can’t make noise, and I’m sure my neighbors hear her now and again, but parrotlets can’t scream (something I appreciate as much as my neighbors do!).

They look very similar to lovebirds, but they’re smaller. Lovebirds weigh 45-70 grams, parrotlets are usually around 30. They are feisty, funny, smart, and wonderful. They are also nippy, feisty, opinionated, and unaware that they are the smallest parrots in captivity (second smallest in the world).

Somewhere around here I wrote up the pros and cons-I’ll see if I can find that post and link it for you.

Oh, and with birds it’s “species” rather than “breed”

Re: Not sure which breed to get...

Sounds like you are most interested in XS parrots. I would venture to say any species in that size range would be fine in an apartment setting- budgies, lovebirds, parrotlets, cockatiels... We even have numerous members who have green cheek conures in apartments with no issue (they are very small little conures) and even some of us with much larger parrots in multi family housing.

NOT suggesting you get a medium/large parrot, but just saying we've lived in apartments (I bed and studio, plus a sublet basement) and now own a condo with our amazon parrot for the entire 10 years we've had him with no noise issues (though larger birds can certainly be MUCH noisier than even the loudest small birds). I think if you find lovebirds appealing, you should be totally fine noise wise

If you live near a sanctuary/rescue for parrots I recommend volunteering to see if one of them will choose you. It will also give you an idea of how it is to interact with a variety of parrots.
