So Smart - yet such Idiots

I am repeatedly astonished at how much intelligence the budgies can fit into their tiny little heads. And then they do something SO idiotic.

New cage. 3 times taller, with platforms & ladders. (They love it, I can tell, despite the little ingrates acting ever-so ho-hum about it.)

Calliope standing at top of ladder examining part of their new territory. Long tail feathers still resting on the ladder. And here comes Jefferson.

Well Jefferson wants to proceed UP the ladder and ONTO the platform. And he's gonna do it, by pushing & poking Calliope out of the way.

But, how does he get to Calliope, in order to start shoving at her? Yep, you guessed it. Right up the ladder ONTO her Tail.

So there's Jefferson, pushing at Calliope & yelling at her to get moving -- whilst standing ON her tail preventing her from doing exactly that!

Re: So Smart - yet such Idiots

Hello fiddlejen,

I would remove Calliope from the new cage and give her the old cage all to herself, so Jefferson can no longer bully her. That would prevent Calliope from a possible future injury.

Good Luck!

Well I've seen them bully each other, and I have occasionally separated them for fighting. (Which, they HATE to be separated by the way, they seem to consider it punishment & will stop squabbling a few days afterward.)

But I'm 100% convinced this was not a case of bullyiny, merely idiocy. My normally highly intelligent Jefferson clearly just wanted off the ladder and onto the platform, and Calliope was clearly Willing to move, but Couldn't because Jefferson was demonstrating his Idiot side.

Re: So Smart - yet such Idiots

Pretty standard behaviour for budgies really. Bunch of little cantankerous brats. The bickering is just how they interact with each other. Females are much worse than the males so Jefferson sounds like he got off lightly. My budgies can go from wild screeching and trying to bite each other to feeding each other in about as much time as that took to read. Very moody little guys and not always the brightest. Jefferson sounds like he's no exception to making poor choices. Just like mine.

You have really captured the Rickeybird's "IQ"... so smart, yet so silly. Such clever but kooky darlings really demand constant vigilance, do't they?
